again: children have zero mortality salience; your job, as a parent, is to shepherd them to the age where they can develop it

sometimes, in particularly egregious cases, it requires you to take advantage of situations that present themselves; I guarantee you that that kid will, for the rest of his life, not be careless with his siblings, with others’ children, or with his own, because he will KNOW - deeply, certainly, without a shadow of a doubt - exactly what it feels like to be helpless in the water

that will generalize to a certain caution about potentially dangerous situations, which is precisely what you want the kid to learn - not every dangerous thing “looks” dangerous, THAT’S WHAT MAKES THEM SO DANGEROUS

that, in turn, will prevent the kid from losing his own life…. or worse, from causing the loss of somebody else’s through negligence

that’s worth an unscheduled bath and a minor amount of pants-shitting terror

he was apparently able to get her breathing again, and as far as I know there were no downstream consequences, but he was (rightfully) pissed at his son for doing what he had instructed him NOT to do (“do not go in the pool without adult supervision”), so he picked him up and tossed him in the pool while standing next to it

this would be an example of demonstrating “that’s what it fuckin’ feels like”, and was 100% appropriate; he was standing nearby so his SON was in no danger of drowning, but got to experience the feeling of “oh I’m going to be struggling in the water for a minute”

kids are dumb, and have zero mortality salience, so when you run into a scenario like that, it is your absolute divine obligation as a parent to make damn sure the lesson sticks, and if it went down as described, he was 100% justified; I’d have done exactly the same thing, because “I’d fuck up anybody that put one of my kids in mortal danger” doesn’t really have an exception for the person endangering one of your kids being one of your other kids

maybe he’s a little more open with his life on social media than I would be (especially given his circumstances), but I can understand the deep exhaustion of trying to make shit work and then getting force-fed a moment of “OH SHIT” panic because the kid chose that moment to not understand clear English while out of your sight for ten seconds
