I don’t figure you personally agree with this but I’m sure you can understand why I wish Washington had accepted Royal Anointment -

It’s more that various heretics over the years attempted to make unauthorized Biblical translations into common languages at the time. More recent examples of this - like Jehovah’s Witnesses “New World Translation” - are illustrative that the concern was and is basically valid. I‘m not even a papist and I can see what the real problem was.

One of the Roman Catholic West’s earlier, more notorious persecutions, was against the Cathars - who were essentially Manicheans, and were causing all sorts of social disorder in the 12th Century in southern France. RCs get a bad rap for it but the Cathars were pretty nuts by the standards of the day.

Goes back to the whole Social Disorder / Melian Dialogue thing, imo. I’m not an Imperialist; nevertheless Empires just sort of do things like that. Roman Catholicism wasn’t exceptional in that regard - they all put down hostiles in the borderlands.

Big part of why I’m homeschooling every opportunity I get; there’s zero advantage to be had from the public education gulag, nothing but stress and misery.

Most of my devices I inherited from my great-grandpa have at least a little rust on them. Not bad for 70+ years but there. -

Yep; while heredity was at least understood to exist, and had some empirical data under its belt, the Modern World at the time was very much driven by “Grand Narrative”. -

I consider the Genesis narrative to be a basically reliable history; and I don’t believe Noah was personally required to go round up every single species; as it was clearly an event under supernatural agency. Noah was faithful and obedient to the Almighty God, and did exactly according to what was expected of him. God covered the rest.
Further, I find it doubtful that anyone with triple-digit IQ actually believes the classical Evolutionist narrative, these days; that is, that random-chance mutation over billions of years can account for the observed biodiversity. This is why such alternatives as Simulation Theory and Extraterrestrial Origins of Life have taken hold; when I was a kid these were considered jokes.

I agree, ideally; that’s what it should be about. For example; I can look at the molecular-scale flagellar motor affixed to every E. coli bacteria, and see very clear intentionality in its design. If someone were to suggest to me it “just sort of happened randomly, because it had billions of years to blindly do so by random chance,” it’s an impossible sell imo - because it’s absurd. The available evidence at my disposal overwhelmingly suggests intentionality. However, if I presuppose zero intentionality, I am thereby constrained to believe an absurd thing; and must invent a chain of equally absurd things to explain it.
To me, presupposing Intentionality is much less ridiculous, and far closer intuitively to what the evidence suggests.

It honestly does not matter to me whether or not you‘re convinced I’m some sort of evolutionary biologist. The entire fundamental philosophical approach is wrong-headed. It’s answers I don’t need, to questions I never ask. Evolution vis-a-vis Natural Selection was part and parcel of the Secular Humanist religious worldview I was raised in. At the time, we were really big on Punctuated Equilibrium. It’s not something I stuck with after I grew up. -

Nobody really objects to evolution within a type, due to selection pressure; one problem I have with the whole premise is that random mutation does not suffice to explain either the observed biodiversity, *or* the obvious Intentionality of all of it.
So if DNA (for instance) is acting intentionally, independently of random-chance mutation, this represents a strict departure from the evolutionary biology that was current when I was into it. -

I suspect Darwin, specifically, was tasked with establishing a naturalistic basis for explaining the observed inequalities between races, groups and individuals. It sounds fine on paper I guess; but The West had always believed up to that point that Nature alone was insufficient to explain History.
