@Tony @ug @p @EllisDee Same experience with New Jersey, that state is on my eternal shitlist for it. Transplant New Yorkers are like the American equivalent of the "Proud Nationalist Turk praising Turkey from his home in Berlin" meme.

@p @ug @Tony @EllisDee Well I don't entirely disagree that they didn't want to change how they held their money, in fact something that frequently gets lost is just how big of a figure monetarily was at stake. Lincoln explored compensated emancipation as Britain had done beforehand, and found that the sum required to reimburse the planters would have basically bankrupted the country thus making it unrealistic to pursue. But it is not as though there was not industry in the South, it was there and growing year over year leading up to the war, so I don't know that you can say that the old guard was unwilling to explore it.

LA seems a lot cooler to me than New York does. New Yorkers are really stuffy and uptight, Californians seem more chill. If i had to pick between the two I'd probably pick the Cali people to move in, sadly we mostly get New Yorkers. Also lmao at that airport. I can't imagine how much ill repute the rest of the state of Georgia must feel towards Atlanta.

I am not sure I agree that the preservation of the agricultural system was done mostly to uphold a pre-existing social structure. The South did not have the same quantity of industrial resources that the North did (such as coal and the like), and the climate made sharecropping fairly lucrative. Although the industralised model would have surely succeeded the plantation system in profitiability in due time (which is why it is unfortunate that the war happened at all), I am not sure it was quite that time yet in the 1860s. There certainly was some self-interest involved on behalf of the planters though, I mean I doubt anyone would want to give up their fortune without being reimbursed for it and obviously slavery itself IS immoral. Of course neither side was devoid of moralising, that much is certain and I did not mean to imply as much.

    >This wouldn't have worked; didn't work on the South when they started survival-scavenging. Nobody was gonna stop until forced.
Well, it worked for the Founding Fathers. Demoralising the public opinion is an effective way to win wars when you're going up against a country that champions free press and free speech. I think most people's view of history in general suffers a bit from determinism, like for example the much-maligned Pickett's Charge was found via mathematical study to have been one less Union brigade on their defensive line away from working out for the South. That's a decision that's been lambasted by armchair generals for generations and yet if Meade hadn't ignored orders from above to reinforce his defensive line who knows what would've happened.

    >At any rate, I don't have a lot of sympathy for either group of transplants; if you go to a place but you wish it was a different place, maybe you shouldn't have gone.
Scream this from the fucking rooftops man. I think that I would dislike what you described a bit less since they're at least making an honest effort instead of lording some unfounded god complex over the native population, though that does still sound quite unfortunate in it's own way. Like damn, would it kill people to do a little bit of actual research on the area they're moving to?

    >I'm sure that some people find it habitable, but I can't say how.
Tbh I hate the climate too, humid heat is miserable. I'm only still here because I feel culturally bound to the land. If I were from some globohomo city I'd probably have already moved to New Hampshire or something. Also sorry to hear about your personal experiences, I don't condone that sort of thing and find it regrettable when I hear of such things. Your mileage on that will probably depend on the state to some degree, the whole region ain't like that.

@p @ug @Tony @EllisDee Although it is true that the South was less industralised, the extent is greatly exaggerated. They were just less industralised than either the most or 2nd most industralised country on the planet at the time, but the Confederacy had the 4th most lucrative economy in the world, a higher GDP per capita among it's white population than the North did, and built early ironclads.

Given the grisly losses the South inflicted on the North and the measures Sherman had to resort to, it seems they were indeed pretty well-prepared in most respects save for a lack of material assets, or at least as prepared as the North was anyways. Additionally, if there's no economy down south to exploit then why won't Yankees stop moving here? :thinkingrem:

@p @ug @Tony @EllisDee >Free labor that doesn't count towards the per capita figure will do that.
Fair enough and I did consider this as I wrote my original post. I just dislike the perception that the South was some poor backwater. The whole point of the economic model was to enrich one group at the expense of another, which is of dubious morality but that's how most economies worked up until the second industrial revolution.

It just happened to work longer for the South due a bunch of external factors, namely climate. You mostly only see people who didn't benefit from slavery actually opposing it prior to the war. You know how people nowadays complain about exploitative labour but then buy the latest IPhone that was made in some Chinese sweatshop by 12 year olds with no shoes? Yankees buying shirts made from Southern cotton and then moralising about slavery was the ancestor of this behaviour. Same as it ever was.

    >Sherman was one of the few people that didn't expect the war to be quick.
Yeah I don't really dislike Sherman all that much, he was far more reasonable than sometimes given credit and actually had a liking for the south having lived there for a time. The man would hate most of his modern acolytes. I do think that his thoughts here are a bit deterministic however, as Lincoln wrote in his memoirs as late as August 1864 that he did not expect to win re-election. His opponent being McClellan who was running on an explicitly pro-peace platform (lol what a loser). The South's strategy accounted for the lack of resources and sought to sap the public's morale and stomach for war before the cupboards ran dry by winning great victories in battle. Which I do think it came fairly close to succeeding at, but several stumbles (most notably the incompetence on the Western front and Gettysburg) ultimately prevented it from coming to fruiition.

    >This is an excellent question. The place didn't seem habitable to me.
Well I was being a smartass, but there are some reasons. For one the economy in the area isn't really all that bad, all of the negative statistics are mostly unfortunate side effects of reconstruction and segregation. In the past the region was mostly held back by the climate being hellish in a pre-AC world (it's still pretty horrible today but a lot of yanks love it for whatever reason), aliments such as hookworms, and of course the destruction caused by the civil war.

Most of these things are now remedied, so the area has been on the up economically for some time. We have cheap property prices and also a low cost of living as well, so a lot of people from blue states suffering from ridiculous amounts of inflation move here (this is also why GDP can be a very flawed metric for determining wealth, doesn't matter if you make 3x more if you have to pay 3x the price for basic amenities). They then proceed to make no attempt whatsoever to fit in to the local culture which is thanks to the lingering effect of (usually false) stereotypes.

Which is why transplants have become rather stigmatised down here. I know a guy from Alabama who had a customer walk in and make fun of his accent. His reply? "I thought we were in Alabama".
