Retail absolutely sucks. When I stated out as a cashier before being moved to the floor, it took nearly everything in me not to jab an ice pick into the skulls of half the customers that came to the service desk.
Being moved to the floor as sales nigger wasn't that much better. Some were nice and most I wanted to jam a pick through their eye.

I remember there was a similar urban legend where people thought Amouranth was a man. I think it's long since been debunked. But you are right we are going to enter a time where it will be next to impossible to tell the difference.

Considering the universe consists of billions upon billions galaxies with their solar systems full of suns, planets and moons. Including some that are most likely in a habital zone that has the potential for life. Our Galaxy, the Milky Way, has several millions of star systems. Therefore the potential for life on other planets. Our understanding of the universe is the equivalent of looking into space through a key hole. Are we going to come in contact with them? Probably not but given the size of the universe, the potential for life is out there. Until we develop technology that allows us to travel to other galaxies and star systems, there is no definitive answer other than possibly.
