Or, Why This Military Parade Being Low Energy and Uninspiring Matters (Or Should Matter)
The US isn't a country that does military parades. The immediate comparison will be drawn to countries who do or did, like North Korea, China, Soviet Russia, Nazi Germany. You'll no doubt encounter a boomer who will acknowledge that compared to perfectly ordered ranks of Soldiers in dress uniforms marching in step while a military band plays a fanfare, our Soldiers strolling in loose ranks in their daily uniforms while some buttrock band plays is uninspiring
They'll even remind you that we have won wars, while some countries with more elegant parads have not. We know this only partially true; the last war we won was a no contest blitz of Iraq. During the lifetime of the boomer, we've also been defeated twice by ragtag guerrilla forces
HERE'S THE IMPORTANT PART; our military crowns itself on very faded laurels, particularly, the fact that we "won" WW2. It should be obvious that this isn't the same fighting force, and again, here's the important part:
When your force begins losing it's veterans - not people who serve in garrison for a number of years and get benefits - it's veterans who have deployed, operated in denied territory, or seen combat - there has to be a transfer of knowledge and skills. Talk to any old head in the military currently, and ask him about the quality of Soldier coming into the Army now. They'll tell you they're soft, entitled, undisciplined, and do the bare minimum
And this is true. The next war fought by the US Army won't be fought by the veterans of WW2, or really even the veterans of Iraq/Afghanistan. It will be fought by zoomers deadass fr fr who get upset and cry about "hazing" or being "disrespected" when they receive even mild punishment.
The opening battles of any war are always brutal as both sides adapt to how the battlefield has changed and scramble to adapt their doctrine
So what does a fighting force fall back on when it has green Soldiers and outdated doctrine?
IT'S ORDER, DISCIPLINE, RESILIENCE, AND TRAINING
Watch our schlubby, out of shape Soldiers wearing the same uniform they'll throw on the floor when they get back to barracks walking to Three Days or Grace or whatever in the Capitol with some old equipment and then watch North Korea goose step in perfect time wearing impeccable dress uniforms and ask this
During the opening punches of as war, who do you think is more likely to break, route, and shit pant, and who is more likely to charge a machine gun nest?
