Thanks for this discussion. I feel like, I have no particular attachment to mastodon being the place everyone is, but also it *has* to be the place everyone *could* be, and be here happily and safely.
And it seems like by saying “we don’t have to be the popular place” it too often functionally ends up being “we don’t need to change to make this a good place for the people who aren’t already here.”

As a stats phd I just want to say I love you all, thank you for the validation. Really helps counter the person who when I told them I got into my program they said “what is there even to study?”
@mekkaokereke yea exactly. Though I might even go farther in the sense that like, controlling women is a fundamental ingredient to fascism. So you can’t say, as a bad analogy “building a roof is not the end goal, the end goal is to build a house.” You don’t have a house without the roof. And you don’t have fascism without violent patriarchy.
But the broader point very much stands.
@mekkaokereke my only quibble here is I actually think controlling women and reproduction is a fundamental goal of fascism, not a secondary one. Violent patriarchy is central to fascism, and forced pregnancy is the best tool to enforce it.
@womble lol
The long term??? Libraries have been around for thousands of years!! Last I checked people have been writing books that whole time?????
Pass a law that says govt can’t spend more on private transport infrastructure than on public transit
Pass a law that says you can’t pay cops more than public school teachers
@smach @mekkaokereke god bosses like this are the BEST! Someone who is prepared and ready to seriously consider your recommendations? Who takes seriously the work you’re doing?? How can you not love that?
How does this work if it’s a building that’s just one shop and maybe some apartments on top? I still see so many of these shopfronts sitting empty.
@mekkaokereke @njudah @sanae but strictly speaking this doesn’t make economic sense right? If right now I’m charging $10/mo and in a year I can charge $150, it’s true that my $100 will cover the lost money, but I would be better off charging $10 until the market picks up and then raising my rent.
Maybe I just assume it will take a certain amount of time to find a renter willing to pay a higher amount and it’s worth holding out for that? But it’s weird to charge more than the market supports.
@inthehands I listened to a really interesting interview with sen. Butler who went from activist to politician in a really sudden way. And she spoke about how more close relationships between the two would be more efficient, pointing to MLK and LBJ.
Def worth a listen.
@scottsantens truly amazing how we’ve convinced ourselves that when people lack money, giving them money won’t solve the problem. Or that when people lack housing, giving them housing won’t solve the problem.
I was listening to Beyoncé’s Freedom this morning and I just had this vision of it being November 12th ish and Harris is walking out on stage beaming and triumphant as it plays behind her to give her victory speech
@goatsarah I absolutely love this post but I have to admit I am spending way too long with a preschooler into lizards and I was excited cause I thought this was gonna be a post about trans women somehow running on water 😂
@barney @GreenFire WHAT?!
@dangoodin sometimes I just think about how if juuuust a few more people had voted for Al Gore instead of proclaiming him “basically the same” as Bush we would be twenty years ahead of where we are on climate.
And hundreds of thousands of Iraqis would still be alive.
But luckily the democrats learned their lesson…right?
@benroyce @Ultraverified @dangoodin yea agreed 100%. But also, the left are our allies. We are not going to make common cause with them with vitriol or snark. Having a far left benefits the entire left. I’m just hoping we can “organize organize organize” in time and as long as needed so that common cause becomes clear.
@mekkaokereke I feel like we really have a huge weakness when it comes to sustaining any sort of political pressure. We can turn out for the protests, which feel righteous and glorious. But when it comes to the day to day grind of getting people elected, of keeping your issue front of mind…not so good.
Hopefully the subtext of who “we” is here is clear…
I felt this way after the women’s march too. And here we are, without even roe to protect us.
@mekkaokereke i don’t think Biden is beyond criticism by any means. But I do think his Covid response was better.
We can’t forget that Trump just fully failed on all fronts. He put kushner in charge for gods sake. Just comparing the length of recommended isolation is not a good metric.
Biden managed to get multiple rounds of vaccine to any American who wanted it. Free. In a local pharmacy. And mailed everyone free tests.
