@lain if you are developing software palatable to the general public, you would be a idiot to make it foss. you can easily sell that shit and make yourself financially independent.

@mcc @xgranade The price is definitely their biggest problem, but it's just how it is with a small scale and making their own products (instead of some white label shit), they're not making more money with that price I'm pretty sure. It's like buying clothes made locally, it's way more expensive for functionality the same thing. If you're price sensitive, second hand is probably the much better option.

Honestly this whole drama feels like a nothingburger to me. Framework sends many orders of magnitude more money to Microsoft which are many more orders of magnitude evil than what any individual can possibly be. But in the same vein it is also a stupid hill to die on for just 600 bucks. Hopefully this will be a teaching moment for them.

@xgranade What I'm getting at with Microsoft is that framework is mostly a normal computer company making computers for normal people were unethical but useful software is the default.

I think it's fair to say that both projects have grown a sizable user base because of their features, and despite their politics. It's not like most people using them was explicitly looking for fascist software or whatever (some probably are).

If a popular free software project is fash, it means the free software community has failed. If someone bad is controlling a useful program, it's up to the free software community to fork it and build a more popular and welcoming one. Instead of doing that, it's criticizing people for donating money to software they find useful. What framework would learn from this is it's not worth it to donate like this, just do the bare minimum, give some people access to their machine so they get Linux support for free and walk away, doing more is just gonna get shit flung at you.

@bpaassen Wait is the idea to have LLM substitute human participants or to use it for quick pilot studies, kinda like how people first do simulations then animal trials and the human trials.

@bpaassen So wild that it's even considered formally and a accepted by peer review, it's like if some physicist suggest that we should just do the experiments in Minecraft, it would be so much cheaper.

@cjd calling it a 51% attack is probably giving it too much credit, it's a pool of mining pools so no one is really in control of 51% of the hash rate. It's certainly a interesting case and I'm curious what mitigations the monero people will come up with, but it's not a unknown vulnerability.

@cjd the most you can do with a 51% attack is to fork the chain, but people are not stupid and know what chain is the right one and with this type of crowd sourced compute people are gonna see you from a mile away.

@WandererUber @lain @Ree @sun Yeah from their documentation, it's just a decentralized mining pool where the top operators get to vote on the direction, everything else is fluff.
