the choice of the policy is directly related to and inspired by Servo's; both the current "no" policy, and the proposed "yes if de minimis" policy. I was aware of the proposal for quite a while before it became widespread knowledge recently and was intently waiting to see how it works out for them

as best as I can tell, the only strong view in favor of "yes" is by an outsider without contributions, Sid Askary, who claims it might hurt funding (!)

this is like the MVP of having principles, and so many ostensibly caring about their impact people in OSS leadership fail it

(for the record, i think "take money from some but not all companies involved in war based on their actual impact and relation to the world at large" is a legitimate ethical position for an OSS project to have. you could also just never do that. but if you do you better fucking think a lot about what exactly it is you support. "oh we want them all to be welcome" is inexcusable)

there is no tradeoff or ethical dilemma to solve there, people just suck

you know what's cursed? the nixos and rust people who stand up for palantir participation are not even doing it because palantir is useful

palantir is known for literal decades to be incompetent losers to basically everyone who works with them

there is no reason to make that stand except to simp for imperialism. u are not "saving lives" in the slightest by doing that, do not delude yourself over it

@mcc @owen for example I have never seen "a folder" with "files" and I did not have the background to comprehend those concepts because I was not an office worker. I have probably been in an office a few times but I never made the connection because I've never used those objects much less understood why somebody would care that much about them

@mcc @owen I actually quite vividly remember learning desktop computing as a child (Win95) and I found the metaphors being used borderline incomprehensible. I learned them as something that is a given and only years later I figured out why people made it this way

so I don't really buy this line of argument, personally

@mcc @owen i came here to say what Owen just did. any use of a new tool at all, even if it comes down to "intuition", requires learning; and "intuition" is just learning you've done at some earlier point anyway
