using kobo forma with koreader makes me feel like i'm from the Star Trek future holding a powerful artifact

it does what it should, it's pleasant to interact with, it has good aesthetics, and it helps me understand books in a way paper doesn't (context sensitive dictionary lookup turns out to be really important for me)

it's been a day and the thing already feels like an extension of myself; and i never have to work around it

the only thing i'm missing is being able to copy text on the reader and paste it on my laptop/phone, but i should be able to add KDE Connect support to it to enable that

@whitequark that sounds very promising, I still have a 2nd gen Kindle which Amazon is doing their best to kill. Did you look at anything that would also let you annotate PDFs?

@gsuberland something that i find very pleasing with this particular device is that you can turn off full page refreshes _entirely_ and it's still perfectly fine, unless you're reading manga

there's no ghosting if you're just reading text

@whitequark how fast are the interactions on it? that's been what kept me away from e-readers. click a page link and... is it slow or did it just not register my press?

@gsuberland KOReader in particular seems very well engineered, both from a user's perspective and a developer's (i'm currently looking at the Lua sources)

the UI feels like it's actually designed, for actual people, and not just a half-baked prototype someone slapped on github cause it was good enough

@gsuberland this thing has an ancient imx6 but it can still process complex pdf and cbz files with only minor delays

@whitequark I suspect the bottleneck on a lot of devices I've used is the piddly-ass processor they stick in it, rather than the display.

@gsuberland also koreader does lookahead that completely hides the delay if you're reading something normally

@whitequark oooo I've been happy with my stock kobo but I don't think I knew what I was missing. I'll have to check this out.

The ability to read a book and look something up has been a game changer for me. Albeit, I read slower now than my normal slow pace, I understand more. I converted the Lexicon Urthus to the kobo dictionary format for the Book of the New Sun series. Being able to install custom dictionaries is neat.

@whitequark @gsuberland Which device are you running there? Looks reasonable

I have a Ye Olde gen3 kindle (that I of course hacked when possible) which had sorta-similar page latency but not nearly the same capabilities. it got a wee damaged by a truck in the desert a few years ago tho, and I’ve been meaning to find a good replacement
