I’ve been there and there’s some things I like about the place (chief among them how the entire damned place roleplays surreality on turbo), but any definition of progressive is never a word I’d have put forward for it! yowza

I envision this as "batteries included", in toolchains and runtimes. using it and having it should be as close to free as possible. sure it'd imply a _lot_ of work to get it there, but I think it'd be worth it

(it _is_ on my list of ideas to sketch up in detail, and might get to it soon)

we have /.well-known/{xxx} for so many things

let's shove more things in there (or whatever non-http contract boundary an application has). let's make inter-dependencies _explicitly defined_ instead of some shit you derive from readmes and CM systems - fairly doable for application builds/artefacts too, imo

@ryanc oh yeah the bridge/vlan fdb and pruning stuff on many of them could use some serious improvements. there’s also some subtle but annoying inter-device behaviour differences I’ve found which afaict _are not_ because of swchip specifics

@ryanc iima, how did you approach/run the scaleout/job management for this? some diyolo once-off, or did you have something for it around already?

@GossiTheDog I don’t touch windows much at all these days, what particularly makes it non-automateable? I would’ve thought things like pxeboot’d scripted run envs or something could be viable, albeit that’s with a heavily *nix-background talking

You could pull the package archive metadata, unpack+read that, and compare (for this you’d need to keep state of remote version or compare at runtime)

there’s also apt commands but those would need execution somewhere that could run apt

Also you could have the host report its current and delta, then monitor the reports?

(Dunno what you’re trying to solve for, so just throwing ideas out)

Admittedly I do tend to use it on a lot of things but pretty much _always_ with some swearing added in (because there’s always _some_ new flavour of bullshit localised)

@hipsterelectron I've been thinking about that and I'm not really sure how one would go about getting it done (in the sense that I don't have sufficient domain knowledge, and there's also the thing about different regulatory zones)

and there's some interesting philosophical questions about rights/restrictions in the scope of it too (nature of enforcement, etc etc)

would love to do some reading about it if there's someone who's done the thinking and writing about it
