      @RustyCrab that or Apple subscriptions. I don't remember any of their models having any sort of SD card slot

      The thing is that 128GB goes real fast if you install a few long running gachas and have a music library on top of that

      Your average retard doesn't need 1TB indeed, but they're also the kind of people who never ever clean up and wants to keep 20 years of photos for no reasons

      I had a SATA SSD fail on me back in 2012, and I've had DDR4 go bad on me recently. It's not common, but it does happen. I haven't had an nvme failure yet. There's no replacement for actual backups though.

      I never put anything important on USB/sdcards. They're just used to transfer things. They don't really store your data. They store a probabilistic approximation of your data that just tends to be very accurate. Remember the controllers on sdcards intentionally space out reads/writes to prevent degradation.

      I always buy phones with sdcards because I prefer local music storage. I like having a copy of my 300GB of music directly on my device.

      @mischievoustomato @RustyCrab @coolboymew prores is:
      -not raw
      -not even lossless
      -is proprietary

      It just has a really high bitrate and the pro can do 4k 120fps in it (3.5Gb/s (422MiB/s)). Also I'm like 90% sure it's only USB 3, not thunderbolt though I don't care enough to fact check that.

      @coolboymew @sendpaws I've owned a fair number and I think my failure rate has been something like 15%. That's not *awful* but it's enough to not have good faith in them for important things. That's compared to hard drives/ssds where the fail rate has maybe been 3%.

      @RedTechEngineer @RustyCrab Isn't it like less SSD burden, but more CPU burden on decompression - ergo more power usage. I don't think that either way makes substantial difference on PC, especially with high specs one. On mobile device more decompression workload would probably kill battery faster, which is much worse alternative to simply getting a bigger SD card - which also got much cheaper over the years.

      @niobleoum @RustyCrab no. Flac compression is asymmetric. It takes about the same amount of work for the CPU to decode regardless. However larger files put a larger burden on the memory controller. The one sole "downside" is that better compression will take more processing power to ENCODE. But this was already a fast process in the 00's.

      @niobleoum @RedTechEngineer I am not the most informed about this topic but I learned recently that write capacities on SSDs now are insane. Like more data than you would probably ever write in a lifetime. I've owned one that's been abused by writing output files from compilers every day for years and it's finally gone from 100% to 99% write capacity.

      Point being, you probably shouldn't be thinking about write cycles anymore.

        Video camera
        Embodiments provide a video camera configured to capture, compress, and store video image data in a memory of the video camera at a rate of at least about twenty three frames per second. The video image data can be mosaiced image data, and the compressed, mosaiced image data may remain substantially visually lossless upon decompression and demosaicing.
