Foss devs need to ask themselves the question why 90% of users of users prefer “enshittified”, user-hating, privacy disrespecting applications and services that cost money to our free, ethical and user-friendly offerings.

@lain@lain.com cus slave infrastructure accomodates slave necessities more neatly than uncomfortable but potentially more liberating alternatives. Easier to not think for yourself.

@mangeurdenuage @lain turns out corporations are able to do loss leaders and paper over the cost of maintenance with profit from other operations, and people would rather offload the cost of maintenance to the corpos so they don't have to do it themselves

@lain FSF goal is not for users to adopt their software. if everyone did, they would lose their sect's unique features. FSF goal is to radicalize a small group of nerdy autistic young folks to replenish their ranks.

FSF keeps others out intentionally by making increasingly irrational demands that only work from their emic view and moral system, while appearing to be irrational and uncompromising from outside.

@_anti @lain you want to see slave infrastructure, use Microsoft Teams. It's so shit that you'll probably some economics just to understand how such software could possibly be so wrong and yet be used at all by anybody.

Discord meanwhile is just genuinely good, which is why people use it. Even as bad as the company is and as much as it is an annoying retread for content to not be on a website but in a little hidden bunker with a "click the trans flag to continue" virtue screen, people use it because everything is much worse.

@sunbeam_rider because C-level execs are the customer and all the features are in that direction, and some features are incompatible with what users of the software would actually like.

For example, if search is really good, then internal actors can quickly betray the company. If there are good local logs, a disgruntled employee can walk away with them.

@apropos @lain @_anti I don't understand how Teams is even acceptable for a big corporation in any way. Like, for things like legal compliance. It is agonizing trying to extract data from it, it's extremely manual process that involved scrolling, letting it load new messages, and scrolling again, for like an hour to load messages. It's fucking abominable. I had to do this recently.

@lain Because normal people are too stupid to think "this networked-only service won't work if the company goes away" because it works RIGHT NOW. Then when the company goes away or has an outage, they get mad and then go right back when it comes back or a new company fills the gap. People are stupid and shortsighted.

Also companies have the money and staff to put work into UI and ergonomics. You can even have the will to do that in FOSS and not have the money or time, or you end up with assholes like GNOME

@nemuizabrak@mastodon.world @lain@lain.com @RedTechEngineer@fedi.lowpassfilter.link ancient Windows software doesn't work with itExactly, and that's not the only reason why nobody should use it.
for example Telegram assumes any webp file is a stickerOh yeah this is something I have noticed as well when using Telegram. But it doesn't think every webp is a sticker however, it has some arbitrary things that it checks like dimensions or filesize if it decides to turn it into a sticker instead. But yes what Telegram does with webp is dumb.

@amerika @lain @sun windows no longer works "out of the box".

It doesn't seem a support hotline is really offered anymore and if you post on the windows help forms with an issue, most of the time you get told to run `sfc /scannow`, which is totally useless.

On decent hardware, unlike windows, everything just works on GNU/Linux-libre.

There are companies that offer handholding services for GNU/Linux and it's simply a matter of paying for such service.
