Attended a great talk yesterday at @dedependance hosted by Nuria Ribas Costa with @Mer__edith and Evelyn Austin (@bitsoffreedom) about #Signal, AI and Europe's "Big Tech Initiatives" (amongst other things).
They had an interesting perspective on how Europe can catch up on the US with regards to Big Tech, "the cloud"¹, hyperscalers, etc.
Their perspective was: should we even want this? Should we want to copy the US's Big Tech template and perhaps end up like them?
@skinnylatte For me, as one of those white people mentioned in this thread, it's more about "not yet another appliance my kitchen is full enough as it is!".
But I just throw rice in boiling water like pasta and taste it every few minutes until it's ready while preparing the rest of the meal 🤷
@taylan So either you misinterpreted what I wrote or I am indeed using the wrong terms.
What I tried to convey in my original post is with the recent news of Neil Gaiman, someone whose writing I enjoyed a lot, I only need two more people from my past that I admired to come out as awful people.
I was not saying Tori Amos is a "terf" at the moment.
Does this clear things up or do you think I should not use the term at all?
Reading your post above I am not clear on your opinion of that term.
@mcc@jbo I was disappoint when we couldn't put widgets on the lock screen anymore. I like having my calendar in an unavoidable place so I do not forget things.
(Yes, I know about mods and widgets on the homescreen. #SailfishOS also fixes this for me.)
@deshipu@technomancy I'm not a billionaire asshole¹ so I don't know. I've also not given it much thought but if you don't expect the worst, I don't really know what to say.
Look at Jabber / XMPP²: we could have had an open protocol and a wealth of different clients but we're stuck with WhatsApp³ in most of the world and whatever the hell the US uses.
¹ just a regular one ² yes, I know XMPP still exists but who uses it? ³ try using an non-iOS or degoogled phone, see how that goes
