@clacke I thought Alan's Joker was pretty meh, but Clayface is fantastic. And I was shocked Lake Bell was good, I *hated* her Surface series so much. Flames up the side of my face bad.
@Polychrome@benbrown@drwho I'm psyched for both of those, I was gonna look at the usual anime sources next month. Weird that Cleo's got it, they have LP/DVD distribution but who'd think to order from themโฝ
@clacke I used to code all sorts of stuff in Pascal. I have a bunch of utilities I've done in it, and some text games. I bet I could get them all ported to Mod-2 and made more portable.
@Seg Get used to the file manager, and in Warp you get a real dock with drawers. Things to play with: drag & drop colors & fonts anywhere. Files, folders, app borders & buttons. F-keys for window control are useful, it's kinda RatPoison-like.
16-color kinda sucks, tho, it's meant for 256 color at least.
It seriously was the best single-user OS. I switched to fucking Linux because I was doing web stuff and it was easier to run a server.
@clacke But the book *is* all narration. You know a lot more setting detail in it, but the 1984 movie is from young Paul's point of view, and he's been deliberately misled all his life, he wasn't even supposed (to the BG) to be born.
I didn't see this new Dune 2 (2023), didn't see Dune 1 (2021), probably won't ever bother. It looks dull, like Victorian costume dramas, and the score's repetitive.
I was OK with the Dune (2000) series, if very very boring, and still non-canon to the books. Good soundtrack.
David Lynch's Dune (1984, long cut) is fantastic. Anyone who dislikes it on aesthetic or action reasons is wrong; it's not very much like the books, but eh. AWESOME soundtrack. #dune#arrakis#frankHerbert
@clacke Well, R4RS/IEEE had non-hygienic defmacro in most impls.
R6RS added better IO types, hashtables, exceptions, a saner replacement for defmacro, which let records generate full names and some more niceties, AND had full Unicode support like a 21st C language.
Then the impls who weren't smart enough to do all that said "we'll make our own R7RS (small) without even hookers or blackjack". But now R7RS-large is just adding more and more crap to catch back up.
@clacke R5RS doesn't have library/modules, so it's unlikely to be long-lived. R7RS-small has bad decisions like abandoning Unicode, and R7RS-large is a bloated piggy, it'll never be done or implementable.
The two most solid impls of Scheme (Chez & Racket) are R6RS (Racket also has its stuff on top), and probably will be for forseeable future/maybe forever.
Maybe R8RS will sort that out next decade. Until then I just simplify my R6RS code if I need it to be more portable. #scheme
@clacke The problem is we don't know what Human intelligence is. There's multiple subsystems in the brain, some going back billions of years, mostly fast signal processing/simplification. There's a very very recently added language model, which might even work quite a lot like LLMs. There's some level of abstract reasoning most mammals, birds, and cephalopods can do, which must not need language. And then whatever makes us think we're smart, probably a pretty small loop.
@clacke So yeah, any one piece doesn't make AGI. An LLM is just a blithering idiot Markov chain. But at some point if you wire up enough of these stupid things together, you get something that acts intelligently, whether or not it's "self-aware". And that's very dangerous to us, just as hominids were very dangerous to every other life on this planet.
@eli_oat@technomancy@csepp pg is notably full of shit a lot of the time. arc & bel are really bad Lisps, and can't even run without an obsolete version of Racket, which is super funny (there's fan efforts to modernize that). And I'm very unfond of Common Lisp, from what little I've done with it.
But somewhere in there is some truth: Scheme is just amazingly cool, and practical if you're willing to get a little dirty. Pre-Common Lisp was so superior to '80s C or Pascalโฆ #lisp#scheme
