    it'll take years but I'm pretty sure China will take over the space after some massive investment.

    In more realistic terms while the current situation of computing hardware companies dumping the consumer markets to chase AI profits is stupidly horrendous and damaging in the short term (several years), I dont think the consumer hardware will remain in a vacuum.

    Smaller companies will try to step into the space left behind by the big companies that left it behind. But it'll take time and their product will probably be inferior compared to what we're used to getting because all the talent and money will go to serving the AI market.

    So we're going to be in a bad place - but computers won't be entirely gone, they'll just suck.

    The race to achieve AGI is about being the first to create an uncontrollable super intelligent artificial entity that can improve itself in impossible speeds into becoming something beyond our human capacity to understand or control.

    This is less about creating SkyNet and more about achieving the I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream scenario.

    My only solace is that all the investment is going in the wrong direction. This isn't the way to achieve AGI and all they'll manage to do is end personal computing through stupid application of market forces, at which point I'll go work at a bakery or something, I dunno.

    @enigmatico chances are they think it'll go on forever (like they did in the .com bubble) or not thinking about the future at all (e.g. the 1929 stock market crash). The ones who do probably assume they'll get a government bailout like in 2008.

    Either way it's just the usual display of short sighted greed.
