I didn't see this new Dune 2 (2023), didn't see Dune 1 (2021), probably won't ever bother. It looks dull, like Victorian costume dramas, and the score's repetitive.

I was OK with the Dune (2000) series, if very very boring, and still non-canon to the books. Good soundtrack.

David Lynch's Dune (1984, long cut) is fantastic. Anyone who dislikes it on aesthetic or action reasons is wrong; it's not very much like the books, but eh. AWESOME soundtrack.

@mdhughes I highly recommend checking out Spicediver's fan-edit of Lynch's movie that uses cut scenes and generally a different edit to get it much more in line with the book (at least story-wise) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJykw3H4PDw

Anyway I agree with the sentiment. Villeneuve took at least as many liberties as Lynch changing the story compared to the book, but the esthetics of his movies are extremely bland, and so is the score. Plus a lot of characters end up being completely flat (e.g. Piter De Vries)

@mdhughes I enjoy and love Dune (1984) and re-watched it many times, but Dune (2021) really improves on its pacing and removes the exposition through narration and inner monologue, replacing it with showing.

Those are things that were probably unavoidable when making a science fantasy film in 1984, but one thing where I think the wrong active choice was made is the mystification and wilful obscurantism of it all.

Dune (2000) goes all the way in the other direction and is very dry and cynical, almost purely political (IIRC, only watched it once I think).

Dune (2021) keeps the mystical atmosphere but also acknowledges that the mystical was manufactured through deliberate manipulations. I feel that's about the same balance as in the book.

@mdhughes Good adaptations to another medium do not look like the medium they came from.

@clacke But the book *is* all narration. You know a lot more setting detail in it, but the 1984 movie is from young Paul's point of view, and he's been deliberately misled all his life, he wasn't even supposed (to the BG) to be born.

@jackbrewster @mdhughes I was sitting there the whole time going "wow, it's amazing that anyone is brave enough to make such a slow and contemplative movie in 2021, I hope I'm not the only one who likes it, so we can see Part 2" 😃

@mdhughes Happy for folks who liked the new one, but it felt like a slog to me. Lynch’s version is so damn fun.

Me 60 minutes into Dune (2021): I appreciate them taking the time to get all this stuff in and not rushing it, but how are they going to finish the book at this rate?
Me 90 mins in: Wow omg they're going for half the book! This is awesome!
