@mdhughes I enjoy and love Dune (1984) and re-watched it many times, but Dune (2021) really improves on its pacing and removes the exposition through narration and inner monologue, replacing it with showing.
Those are things that were probably unavoidable when making a science fantasy film in 1984, but one thing where I think the wrong active choice was made is the mystification and wilful obscurantism of it all.
Dune (2000) goes all the way in the other direction and is very dry and cynical, almost purely political (IIRC, only watched it once I think).
Dune (2021) keeps the mystical atmosphere but also acknowledges that the mystical was manufactured through deliberate manipulations. I feel that's about the same balance as in the book.
