     @aerique @technomancy How can it be threat to them? It's not a competitor, it doesn't do any business in the ad delivery markets, and it doesn't cater to their customers, the advertising and data mining companies. It is literally as far from their competition as it is possible to be.

     @technomancy I really don't understand what's in it for them. According to all stats they publish, Fediverse is less than 1% of their users. Surely they don't care about it so much? Or maybe those stats are a bit exaggerated?

     @deshipu @technomancy If it grows and becomes popular it'll be a threat to them.

     I hold no love for Facebook but they've been pretty good at identifying threats early and taking care of them. For example: Instagram and WhatsApp.

     @deshipu @aerique most peoples' parents are not as accommodating as yours, I'd say? I think I had a couple friends who stayed on XMPP when Google disconnected, but they were all people I talked to primarily on IRC anyway

     if I could get my Signal friends to switch to XMPP or Matrix or IRC I'd do it in a heartbeat, but they'd never do it

     @aerique @technomancy This is something I can't understand myself too. Why did people stop using Jabber? I understand all those people who just used gChat or however it is now called, and never realized it was Jabber, were stopped when Google pulled the plug, but what about all the rest? A lot of people were using it before Google. I'm still using it to chat with my parents. There are clients for every platform, and a wide variety of reasonable servers you can run on a pi in your closet. So why?

     @deshipu @technomancy I'm not a billionaire asshole¹ so I don't know. I've also not given it much thought but if you don't expect the worst, I don't really know what to say.

     Look at Jabber / XMPP²: we could have had an open protocol and a wealth of different clients but we're stuck with WhatsApp³ in most of the world and whatever the hell the US uses.

     ² yes, I know XMPP still exists but who uses it?
     ³ try using an non-iOS or degoogled phone, see how that goes
