    Unless the yarn has absolutely no stretch at all, it is still worth trying this. Even if it looks a little tight at first, there's a good chance it wont after the sock has been worn.

    @Fullycaffeinated @FeartnTired Wrap and turn is a pain in the arse. Most knitting, you can put it down and pick it up again when you feel like it, but for a W&T heel, you've got to do the whole thing in one sitting or it'll all go wrong.

    @Fullycaffeinated @FeartnTired If you can find the dropped stitch, you should be able to pick it up and re-knit it using a crochet hook. No pulling back required.

    I don't think I can describe the process very well verbally, so I'll try and find a video...

    You can ignore Feart's advice on this occasion. Dick stretching is not a usual part of the sock making process!

    @KeepTakingTheSoma @RadicalCartoons I really enjoyed Bad Science, and lent it to as many people as I could. I suppose it's easy to be a sceptic when the things you're being sceptical about are mostly considered hippy-dippy bullshit anyway. Shame he turned out to be a coward.

    @RadicalCartoons It's like the fish oil 'trial' a few years back, only this time, the stakes are much higher. Nobody suffered physical harm from taking fish oil and pretending it was a study; this one will leave a trail of bodies.

    Ben Goldacre used to be pretty good for pointing out bullshit in how science is reported in the media. Seems strangely quiet on this one. Can't think why.

    @Gnomeshatecheese @HebrideanHecate Kids shouldn't have to be spending their time with qualified educators in order to arrive at school knowing how to use a toilet, hold a pencil, look at a picture book etc. They should be learning that at home. Trouble is, adults who were not parented well themselves do not know how/why to do all this. I think we are seeing the results of generational neglect here.

    Getting rid of parenting classes and health visitors was a big mistake. All we have now is social services who can only intervene when things get really bad.

    Imagine being the reason your family ran away from everything they knew, twice, to 'protect' you, and then realising that it was all unnecessary because really, you were just gay and a bit confused. You'd have to keep that secret forever.

    The more I think about it, the more horrified I am for this kid, just not for the same reasons the mum wants us to be horrified.

    He lost his nerve at the very last minute, and ended up agreeing to the same EOW arrangement we'd had since splitting up.

    @stephagain Sounds like he doesn't want time with his kids, but he does want a judge to tell him he is ENTITLED to time with his kids. Dragging an ex partner to court is the worst way of establishing a dialogue. What he's actually establishing here is dominance.

    Is this the same man who did the non-violent communication course, by any chance?

    @Ladyfat @HebrideanHecate Every time a child is removed from school and subsequently murdered, home education gets the blame.

    Every time, the serious case review shows that the authorities had many opportunities to save the child, but they failed to act.

    But people remember shocking headlines, not serious case reviews.

    If any of this was really about protecting children, the statistics about home educated children being less likely to suffer violence, abuse and murder than their schooled peers would be much more widely known.

    @TriptychTwinsRidesAgain Meanwhile, people are literally begging the NHS for help with serious mental health problems and being told to fuck off (and maybe try a colouring book) because there's no money for psychotherapy.

    Fuck 'maybe I should be grateful'. He should never have been allowed to take up time and resources for such a cosmetic procedure in the first place.

His song 'The Vines' is all about his time working in highway maintenance pulling up weeds at the side of the road, but they call it foliage reconciliation to make it sound fancy! 'John Lennon' (the HoT song, not the Beatle!) is good too.

    @sim I do what I can, when I can with music to get me moving. Sometimes, I use the music as a timer. If I'm really not in the mood, but the house is looking awful, I'll decide to clean for 3 songs/1 CD/ 1 podcast episode, then I'm allowed to stop. Even if I don't finish everything, it's better than procrastinating while the mess gets worse.
    I also have a cleaner who comes once a fortnight. I'm getting better at keeping on top of things since I hired her, as I'd be ashamed to let her see the level of squalor I sometimes live in, especially in winter when my depression gets worse. It's also less overwhelming knowing that I don't have to do it all on my own.
