@sim I do what I can, when I can with music to get me moving. Sometimes, I use the music as a timer. If I'm really not in the mood, but the house is looking awful, I'll decide to clean for 3 songs/1 CD/ 1 podcast episode, then I'm allowed to stop. Even if I don't finish everything, it's better than procrastinating while the mess gets worse. I also have a cleaner who comes once a fortnight. I'm getting better at keeping on top of things since I hired her, as I'd be ashamed to let her see the level of squalor I sometimes live in, especially in winter when my depression gets worse. It's also less overwhelming knowing that I don't have to do it all on my own.
@sim Thanks! I'll have a listen while I do my paperwork when I get back to work in a couple of days.
I mostly like folk, rock, ska, alternative, industrial... but am willing to give most things a try. I especially like songwriters who use their songs to tell you a story, and bands that use instruments outside of the standard drums/guitars/keyboard combo. Stick some cellos or a hurdy-gurdy over pretty much anything and I'll probably listen to it!
Teaching lifeskills/household management to people in the privacy of their own homes would probably be a winning business idea for someone who has the time and motivation! In the meantime, you can learn how to do almost anything on youtube.
@sim What new music have you been listening to? I'm always on the look out for new stuff to listen to.
Having someone to come in and help is great. I'd highly recommend it if you can afford it. The only downside is my family have started taunting me for 'becoming middle-class'!
@EatKnitSleepAgain I would definitely recommend Elijah Woods. He has a few nice songs but I don't know which ones are his best ones. But I would definitely listen to Say Hello. His albums are short but I'd recommend bright orange everglow to start with. A few good songs there like last girl and where we're going.
What genre of music do you like? I may be able to recommend some more obscure musicians as I come across them in future.
I do wish that I could find someone who can come in and teach me how to do certain tasks I'm still unsure about rather than necessarily doing it for me. I think I can do some basics but it's stuff you wouldn't normally think about that get me. Other problems are just back-breaking ones which aren't fun... haha.
@EatKnitSleepAgain That's a great tip! I think that I've sort of been doing this too. I might start to create my own playlists in future for this purpose but for now I've been discovering new music by playing an album.
Also, it is good that you have a cleaner to help, it's like having a friend or coach to keep you on track and so you have someone to support you and motivate you to keep it looking better than it is otherwise.
@EatKnitSleepAgain@sim Love a song that tells a story. Lola - The Kinks I'm Mandy, Fly Me - 10cc Life in the Fast Lane - The Eagles Music is amazing and full of infinite variety.
@sim@KeepTakingTheSoma Hamell on Trial does a lot of storytelling. His song 'The Vines' is all about his time working in highway maintenance pulling up weeds at the side of the road, but they call it foliage reconciliation to make it sound fancy! 'John Lennon' (the HoT song, not the Beatle!) is good too.
@EmmaFaber@EatKnitSleepAgain@sim Is this turning into a thread about cover versions that are better than the originals? If so I give you: Walk On By - The Stranglers All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix All The Young Dudes - Mott The Hoople
