@64kb @jackscottau Rewriting crap database queries was one of my party tricks.

A client called me in because his daily update was taking around twenty hours and he was worried that it would soon be over 24 hours.

After a couple of days' fiddling I'd got it down to three minutes or so.

"I can make it go twice as fast as that," I said, "but that will involve a schema change, so about another week's work. My guess is that three minutes is good enough for you and you won't want to pay me more to make it go faster than that?"

@jackscottau IME you always make far more taking over a failed project and fixing it than you ever could have done had your original bid been accepted in the first place.

But hey, your original bid was higher than that of the failed bunch of cowboys, so of course you didn't get the contract the first time around.

@jeffowski Yes, I presented evidence (admittedly of unknown quality) in response to a meme (which came without any evidence at all). I wonder which is more likely to be correct.

@jeffowski I didn't make, or claim ownership of, any "argument". I reported a conversation.

@jeffowski I don't recall whether it was just chatting with police privately or whether it was them reporting to the area committee. If the latter then there would have been figures for each crime type in the report, but the relationship to the economic cycle almost certainly hadn't been proved to peer review standards.

@jeffowski Ah, I was chatting to our local police once upon a time about how the state of the economy is reflected in the nature of crime.

Yes, when there's more money about acquisitive crime (burglary etc) does indeed reduce, but this is balanced by an increase in drunken violence.

@chu When I was a little boy I was taught at school about the disciples meeting after the crucifixion, pooling all their wealth and (IIRC) dividing it up equally.

So the bible clearly preaches communism.

@wood5y How will this tariff work then? The choices would seem to me:

(a) Netflix increases its prices for American users

(b) Netflix restricts what American uses can watch

@GossiTheDog Yes well, can you imagine the bureaucratic hassle involved in correctly and accurately recording a separate password for each device, and making sure it can be found in fifteen years' time next time someone needs to change the programming?

Password control doesn't sound like a very clever design choice to me, given how impractical it would be in real life to change the default password.

So ... in real life, if the password were changed then legitimate people making legitimate configuration changes would have to fall back on sticking a pin up the factory reset hole to get the default password back. And ... guess what ... the hacker could do that too!

@WittyDragon @kibcol1049 There was even a UKIP candidate in my ward who forged signatures on his nomination form.

Which shows unbelievable ignorance and stupidity - he could have collected the ten signatures by knocking on doors at random. Anyone in the politics business knows that there are enough people who will sign anything if that's the quickest way to get you off their doorstep.

@MostlyHarmless I personally think it's unlikely that Tesla dealerships are deliberately setting fire to themselves in order to claim the insurance on unsaleable stock, but hey, once someone starts fake news rumours like that there's no stopping them!

@MediaActivist A good way to ensure that more people remain "fit for work" might be to stop pretending that covid has gone away and stop pretending that long covid doesn't exist.
