One word was all I needed: "retire".

@whitequark I've still got a tiny amount of 1970s real solder left - lead and nasty poisonous flux.

But I don't use solder very often, so this is probably enough to see me out.

@Flisty We got solar first. Our current idea is not to get a heat pump until the boiler dies and needs replacing anyway.

@briankrebs In any other walk of life, "it takes vast amounts of computer power to run this workload" would be responded to by "so how can we make this code more efficient?"

@hellomiakoda I have myself occasionally designed imperative languages that you code in YAML.

But YAML really isn't best suited to this particular job.

@sidereal Once Upon A Time a company interviewed me (for a contract job), but it became clear that they didn't actually have a job, they were just after some free consultancy from the interview.

So when I got contacted by an agency a few years later saying that the same company wanted to interview me again I said:

"Fine, no problem. That'll be £500 up front for the interview, deductible from my first invoice."

That was, of course, the last I ever heard of them.

The hire car got a puncture. It didn't come with a real spare wheel - it came with some sort of "lite" "get-you-home" half-arsed tyre.

Which was rated for fifty miles.

We were more than fifty miles from the nearest garage.

@sibrosan @DerekL @kibcol1049 I remain puzzled as to what's the point of a hybrid. You're carrying around two drive trains and two power sources, so it costs fuel to move the extra weight - where is the saving that makes up for that?

@frenck It happens in loos in offices.

And often enough the sensor can't see you in the stall.

So you have to open the door to wave at it.

But at least you know (... well, in theory ...) that there's nobody else in the room.

@HarriettMB @Infoseepage Round here it's £95 or thereabouts in a pharmacy. I tend to choose one which won't require me to wait for a long time in a crowded tiny shop, as the process of getting the vaccine is probably my single biggest covid exposure risk.

@WestLawns My preference for hard was formed back when chickens were fed on fish meal to the extent that the eggs tasted of fish. Somehow this fish taste was far more disgusting in runny yolks than hard yolks.

@hellomiakoda All of which is great until your neighbours change their wifi band in response, a few days or weeks later or whenever they notice.

@hellomiakoda I haven't worked out how to make Zigbee reliable at all. OK, since my last change to the hardware I haven't lost the whole lot for days at a time, but I'm still not happy.

@bmacDonald94 I just so luuurve "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing", it's such a perfect recursive joke.

(For anyone to whom this is new: Pope actually said "a little *learning* is a dangerous thing". I'm sure Pratchett knew this.)
