I feel like the US government going all-in with making wealth some sort of untouchable superpower is REALLY going to anger those of us who are poor. I mean REALLY anger. #class#rise#revolt#taxtherich#law
@talkingmoose How were the numbers. Things were solid in Duluth - at least a couple thousand, but it was hard to tell without tying ribbons around necks while I counted…
It was well-attended in Duluth, MN. Never made it past the edge of the crowd. So many signs that I could actually smell the Sharpie fumes in the air. I kid you not.
By the way, if you’re new to protesting and nervous because you don’t know what to expect, or because you’re thinking of the news from the summer of 2020, some things you should know:
- It’s OK to show up when you can and leave when you need there. You don’t need a clever sign. Bringing yourself is the most important thing.
- What •do• you need? Dress for the weather. •Overdress• for the weather.
- You •will• feel better for having gone. Getting out the door is the hardest part. You’ll thank yourself.
- These protests are unlikely to be dangerous. Unlike the ones making the news in 2020:
(1) They’re large. Counterintuitively, larger protests tend to be safer: the crowd keeps itself in line. When you see a big crowd full of kids and grandparents, you know people are keeping each other safe.
(2) They’re not confronting the police. Police turn protests violent when they feel personally threatened and provoked. These protests are against politicians, and the police get to stand there and feel like they’re in charge. (They’re not, but they get to feel like it, and that generally keeps them from flying off the handle.)
In case you didn't realize it, the economic uncertainty this group of pissants is causing here in the US is hitting hard. As a musician, the places I play regularly are venues that bring me in as added value. I hold the crowds, they buy more food and drink, and everyone is happy. I've been working since January to fill my 2025 calendar (something that hasn't been a problem in the past) and I can't get through to anybody. It's like screaming into a void.
My guess is that venues feel they can no longer afford "added-value" extras. A few have told me they have cut back on music, or cut it totally.
So yeah, as I feared all last year, it's looking like my livelihood is also on the block. I'm furious at red voters, and even more angry with the blue voters who stayed home because they felt this was the time to take a stand or whatever. Y'all shot us in the knees, and I'm not going to forget it.
Anyone looking for an accessible singer/songwriter with a good sense of humor and an uncanny ability to read a crowd?
@inthehands Just said the same thing to my wife. There isn't a ton they can do right now, but they can do all kinds of things to be in the way. I WANT THEM ALL IN THE WAY ALL THE TIME!
@TonyStark The…discussions…I’ve had in the sauna have been fascinating. One garbage person stands by his proclamation that Harris was the far more evil of the two. It’s clear he voted on women’s rights only. That was his only issue, so he chose the guy who never met a woman he doesn’t disrespect.
