We have a whole class of social media engagement addicted adults saying "well we know it's toxic, but it tastes soooooo good!" but rather than address the fact that it's toxic for everyone, let's just say "protect the children".

Maybe algorithms designed specifically for creating engagement addiction were a bad idea.

Let's be honest with ourselves. If social media content is too toxic for kids, it's probably too toxic for adults too.

@becomethewaifu @dalias @Azuaron @Em0nM4stodon My guess is they're trying to dodge that with their indicator light that's supposed to be on when it's recording. Which of course is easily disabled, but that's done by the end user, not the corporation themselves so they couldn't be held liable

@Azuaron @Em0nM4stodon IIRC wiretapping doesn't apply in "public places" - otherwise anyone just taking regular videos or security cameras or Ring cameras would be illegal.

@hrefna Same is true even between ICE/CBP and cops. Immigration law is weird and the courts have given far more latitude for CBP to violate 4th and 5th amendment rights than cops.

Sometimes I think about how weird it is that I can press on a piece of glass and plastic that sends a signal hundreds or thousands of miles to systems that then trigger a complicated interconnected system of picking, packaging, shipping and delivering a product to my house that itself had parts and labor and equipment and energy invested in its creation that crosses the globe many times over.

@dalias At least for me, I keep all of my personal data backups on cloud storage, so I don't mind just wiping my drive and reinstalling. Hell, I should probably do that more often "just in case". I'm not quite there yet, but I probably could get it down to a reimaging script that automates the whole post-install config and setup
