It is a weird feeling when you realize you're an adult with money, and you can just buy packs of your favorite pens and throw away the ones you don't like, or the ones that only kinda sorta work, or the mostly dead ones you have to scribble a bunch to get them to work. You don't HAVE to just use random free ballpoint pens for forever

@lxo @futurebird Well we're both trans, live in "good" states, and just cut people out of our lives if they're shitty about it. So we don't really know nor care what they think. They're just dead to us if they don't accept both parts of us.

@futurebird Being gay is a far bigger part of my life than being trans. Because I walk around holding my partner's hand. Or giving her a hug. Or we smile at one another and pay for food together. It's easy for people to tell we're a pair of women who are together.

Trans? I'm in no way ashamed of it, and sometimes I have a trans pride something or another around. But most of the time? It's about as interesting of a part of me as where I went to college. Sure I still deal with the remaining body dysphoria, but so do cis people.

Just leave us alone and we'll be your slightly quirky neighbors who are a bit more empathetic to the plights of both genders than average.

@futurebird Yeah, wanting to try being another gender out is a risky thing for your personal and social safety. But I guarantee you that trans kids havent come to that decision on a whim. This isn't dating a sketchy significant other. Or even choosing a "bad" major in college. This is about a kid choosing Who They Are.

Countless kids movies are full of "be who you are" narratives. But somehow the cishets want to say "be who you are, but not That".

No, I'm not interested in the technical reasons why it's not possible with a federated platform. I'm not talking about cases where the administrator of an instance is a bad actor running a noncompliant software. I'm saying it's bad that the protocol doesn't even have the notion of controlling "following only" in the same sort of level of privacy as "mentioned only".

@OliviaVespera I'm no expert in the protocol, but I'm guessing it wouldn't be performant since it'd require sending someone's entire following list to every instance, which in my case would be over 1k usernames

When you want to make an innocuous joke post but then you see a mutual's post fairly recently and know they might take it as a subtoot even if it has nothing at all to do with them, so you just don't make the post at all. And now everyone is going to think this is a subtoot about subtooting about them.

@dalias they weren't mask off enough that I had something definitive to report, but they were dropping some dog whistle stuff on a thread I wasn't personally participating in. Plus then there's just the mansplaining. If i.e blocked all of them, there'd be nothing left of the Fediverse.
