Home is here, but I’d love for the AP-AT bridge to become standard both ways so we can simply choose how we prefer our content (such as clients) rather than have to choose between platforms.
It is often disappointing looking back at people who were trailblazers in their time only to see their deep flaws. Idolizing human beings often sets us up for disappointment.
Bees are also fantastic pollinators and honey producers! They’re wonderful.
The wasps and I are constantly at war though. They love building those damn nasty nests everywhere. Two Yellowjacket stings over the past three years. Little bastards.
Maybe, just maybe corporate ownership of social media isn’t the best thing in the world, particularly when a site is controlled by a narcissistic, man baby 🫠
Can we just stop with the “indiscriminate carpet bombing” claims please. It’s strategically directed munitions at a government that uses civilian areas to protect its assets.
So sure, maybe Meta wants your info too, even though it can’t push you ads here, to sell whatever they scrape (which they’re perfectly capable of doing other ways too). It’s possible, despite the minute size of even Mastodon users to Threads users, even though that seems like a low benefit proposition. But maybe their embrace of the Fedi and AP isn’t to extinguish, and they may want to permanently cover their own asses while offering something for normies and creators that other big names in the space don’t.
When regulators say that Meta locks their users in via use of their size to force use of their product, Meta can say, this:
“No we don’t. Users can leave any time they want *and* retain their audience and interact with them even if the audience is here. It’s easy. But the people who are using and continue to use Threads are doing it because of the experience our app specifically offers. But they can go anywhere and retain their entire audience.”
That is a very, very attractive thing to be able to say to a regulator. And, if it proves to be effective, it could be a way that Meta could continue to be the normie location feeding ads and making money while holding regulators at bay. Heck, it could even be something a regulator asks a competitor why they *aren’t* doing it.
And, yes, we are going to have to make money at some point so you know ads are coming, but we are going to feed you, Threads user, ads that you actually want to see that aren’t going to be intrusive and misleading. But you’re going to like the experience we offer for your content and content consumption and it’s going to be easy and familiar for you while giving you a whole other universe of possible audience.
And that brings me to the unstated reason. What is Meta *not* telling you. Many think it’s that they want Fedi user info…yeah, the ToS language is nice and lawyery, but I’d suggest it’s a different legal reason. Look around at the regulatory community. There is serious concern among regulators with locking in users while purportedly being a “digital town square” (which is a bullshit analogy anyway). What AP offers Meta is not just features to advertise, but a defense to regulatory scrutiny.
Second, the IG folks have said it allows their users to take their audiences with them to or away from Threads. That’s a feature too. Look at what happened on Twitter, content creator, they say. You see things falling apart around you and you’re stuck and have to go somewhere else and start over to rebuild your audience. And, because AP is proven by Mastodon and being implemented on other formerly walled platforms like Flipboard and Timblr already, you aren’t a guinea pig with this false promise of a portable content and audience. That’s a great selling point to make an account and invest your effort in making content.
Why not just extinguish? I offer a few reasons that aren’t about us. The first is why *stay* on threads to a normie. The answer from Threads is this: We give you the features of AP with the features you want and are used to. We give you an algorithm to feed you what you want without you having to work. We give you features like alarms and tags how you like. We are building more too. 4/x
many of whom are expressly seeking to avoid their products, as a ripe embrace, extend, extinguish consumer base to absorb. Obviously, none of us are in Meta execs or Zuck’s mind. But I think there are a few good reasons to embrace AP that, frankly, aren’t about us.
And as someone lurking on Threads, I can tell you the big question to this announcement is “I thought I knew social media. What is the Fediverse and ActivityPub?” They’re asking questions we always hoped they would.
First, let’s take the IG folks at their word a bit. Embracing AP offers features that don’t exist in corporate social media, including the ability to interact with people on other platforms from one place. That’s a thing that normies never knew they always wanted. Man, it sucks checking 5 or more different social media services. But their users don’t have to do that. All from Threads you can see and interact with and post to all these other things! That’s a great feature for those used to a walled garden social media. 3/x
The Fedi #Threads angst: A lament from a Fedi-loving normie. 🧵
I’ve spent much of today pouring over various comments and discussion about the first toe dips of Threads and Meta into the Fediverse. The responses are kind of amazing. From excitement to revulsion, I get them all and I understand them. But the more I think about it, the more I think folks are creating a “why” that may not exist.
To start, I do follow people on Threads. Many of my Twitter follows have migrated off the Bad Place to Threads. Some have not. However, I anticipate as X becomes more people’s ex, Threads is where they will go.
I love the Fedi. I’ve worked hard to build my follows and find my peeps. But it takes work. For me, that work has borne fruit. It’s my place to connect and get my wonderfully chaotic feed.
A lot of folks chose the fedi because they felt and are excluded or targeted and it offers them a community that lets them protect themselves and instances that help protect them. I love that. 1/x
