@jrose@mcc Even the portability being better is somewhat theoretical right now because if your identity is using did:plc then you are unable to move away from did:plc and Bluesky PBC has custody of your keys... And also like people have noticed hosting your own data in a PDS does not really make you independent from their actions so the point of doing it is somewhat unclear.
Bluesky really isn't liking this post by the CEO. Didn't see a single comment agreeing.
I don't condone political violence but I do get the frustration from people over this. This is the BS leadership trying to seem neutral in the same way they were when they welcomed JD Vance.
@mkoek@Setok@dalias@codinghorror that is in fact not how all EU jurisdictions interpret it and while some have taken lax views, there's no special exemption in the EU law for tracking your users if you do it first party.
@dansup spread around the world and a large number of them means it is very unlikely this kind of thing will make people from Mississippi lose access even if some decide to block.
@funbreaker@admin@BeAware they've redefined "decentralized" to mean something that could be decentralized in theory some day when they finally remove all the centralization that they put in at first and ignore some other issues like censorship because at least five people do actually know how to circumvent it.
"Also what about Mastodon having some big instances and haven't you heard that the account transfer feature it has doesn't count."
@youronlyone what's the longest-running? Personally I'd call Ingress a location-based game, I don't know if that has changed but at least the last time I played it did not even have the token "AR" feature that Niantic's Pokemon Go does and I'd not really call even that AR.
That's not to take anything away from these types of games, I think the concept is still great and has not been explored as much as it could be.
@BeAware That seems to be an analytics firm's estimates based on app usage but it broadly agrees with what the platforms have been saying/disclosing. For Bluesky anyone can easily figure out the monthly user counts too so it has been very clear it's nowhere near X and currently stagnating for a while. @HistoPol still a little short on examples but here is one of someone quote posting their own older post and another where the quoted person has probably not enabled the BlueSky bridge.
It might also be that only these self-quotes work for now because I've not really been able to find different examples and some #quoteposts that show up fine from Threads on Sharkey only show the "pending approval" on mastodon.social.
@paul@HistoPol Just as a followup today I am seeing #quoteposts on mastodon.social (mainly bridged Bluesky posts) so it seems like the display part is now live here.
@paul@HistoPol well it's not the actual 4.4, it's just a nightly of the branch that will eventually become 4.4 so it does not have all the features that the final 4.4 will. Of course another reason you might not be seeing it yet even in the case that the code has been added is that it might still be disabled on the instance for now.
@ariadne wikipedia generally shouldn't actually cite primary sources but secondary or tertiary ones since using a primary source tends to involve original research which is not the purpose of an encyclopedia.
@nemo55 there's also some significant issues with Bluesky. I doubt many users will care about the nonexsistent decentralization much just like they never gave it much though with Xitter but the moderation system is a bit of a dumpster fire over there even though they do have some interesting ideas.
@nemo55 I'm sure there are some things they do better but overall not so sure it's them currently getting a lot of registrations is the result of people being more impressed by the features.
The hype cycle has switched between different platforms constantly and BS just happened to be the one in vogue when Musk did a particularly disgusting series of moves and a lot of people finally took notice. Most of those people never even tried Mastodon.
@nemo55 lack of revenue generation is a negative for you as a user? It means things like no ads, not trying to gather as much information as possible about me, letting people use APIs without trying to lock you in etc. It's a huge plus in my book.
Right now you're not seeing what revenue generation will truly mean for Bluesky because they're still living off the VC money. The day they will have to pay it back is fast approaching.
