@clive@pluralistic one key takeaway from the article is the inherent (or current?) nature of BlueSky’s decentralisation is such that you need pretty huge resources to fully run your own thing. In that sense Mastodon’s decentralisation is more widely scalable.
@liztai@ellane I recommend checking the reMarkable e-ink notepad. Benefits of a traditional notebook with some digital benefits (storage, backups, sharing)
It appears the #pagers were possibly just the first step in a larger operation against #Hezbollah by #Israel. Today #walkietalkies have reportedly exploded and now bobs going off? Including at one funeral.
@LittleTokyo not just any man, but Jean-Michel Jarre himself. One of the biggest electronic music artists of all time. I think he must be in his 70s now…
I know Mastodon is the anti-#AI community, or something, but the generated ALT text that @IceCubesApp offers is good enough that I’d be pretty much willing to have it on automatically for any image I post. Even when I do edit it it’s just small changes to highlight something I might want to emphasise. It’s actually shockingly good.
@nafnlaus.bsky.social oh, absolutely. However #BlueSky is way more centralised (I'm not sure if they still have federation working), so an ad approach might be more feasible too.
FWIW I think #Mastodon instances need to start coming up with some sustainable revenue models.
#Israel strike on a school in #Gaza kills at least 30. Reportedly most children. The #IDF states there was a ‘#Hamas command and control centre embedded within the school’. Ah well, I guess that’s all right then.
The nature of #Trump is that whether he is spewing nonsense, or groping ladies, or losing a court case, he needs to be the centre of attention. He needs to be grabbing the headlines.
Right now he is not, #Kamala#Harris is. That will be the case for the next several weeks at least. This will aggravate Trump no end. He will be contemplating what big move to make to turn the attention back to himself. Will he go on a firing spree?
@MastodonEngineering@Gargron@renchap@Claire despite all the hype about full stack I have very rarely, if ever, bumped into someone who is truly good at frontend and backend frameworks and techs. I wonder if you should consider splitting those roles? (Not for me, I might add, but I’d struggle to come up with anyone I could honestly recommend for both).
@tchambers@scottjenson one should trust #AI#LLM facts just as much as you’d trust a drunk guy in a bar. For the same reasons. It may raise some interesting tidbit, but you absolutely have to check it if you plan to use it for anything. I actually think the use of LLMs for knowledge sources is a misguided use of the tech.
@liztai at the moment a lot of folks in the tech industry have had those zeroes slipping away. A lot of people made redundant or unemployed. I can't remember when I've seen that in tech.
@aurynn Why defederate? What’s it to you if their users get ads? Maybe they are good enough or the service is good enough to warrant being on there. We need sustainable business models and diverse approaches. Opposing diversity through extreme measures such as defederation is quite a negative culture and enforces the social bubble.
@pettter fundamentally I would say: ease of use for everyone. Good usability, fun, and ease benefits all.
#Mastodon has a vision, but it's good to make that vision as accessible to as many as possible. Social networks are for connecting people, and everyone on this planet wants to connect somehow.
I see a lot of arguments that are seemingly against #Mastodon growth: 'We don't need to be bigger than #Bluesky or #Twitter, we don't need to change anything'. But why would we intentionally want a platform that is difficult for users and obtuse? Many opensource projects seem to fall into that trap of thinking ease of use is somehow a bad thing, not worthy of attention.
Surely the web is an example of why open standards, with good experience and business (the horror!) is beneficial?
