@inthehands Police are very good at getting nonviolent protests to turn violent. It's what they want; if the protesters are just sitting there they look like arses wading in and thumping folks.

So I'm not sure if that it actually matters, myself, whether a protest was "nonviolent".

@cstross you had me at "you should be able to control your vehicle". I drive a thing with a "lane detection" system that has tried to nudge me into the opposite carriageway a couple of times. I mean, it physically moves the wheel. I can turn it off -- but when you start the car it's always on.

A colleague with a different car had his try to steer him into a ditch…

@hellomiakoda @RegGuy my take is usually the same — broadly Utilitarian. It's not perfect but it tends to point in the least bad direction.

(Of course it can also lead to some horrible moral cul-de-sacs. Have you read Ursula le Guin's _The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas_? ::shudder::)

So I get it if people don't want to. It's a hard choice.
