Canonical has the very rare good change to Ubuntu, but I never want to say that because they make so many bad changes that saying Ubuntu isn't all bad would make me look like I like snaps or something.

@SuperDicq Oh, I could probably say "I'm more used to [program that does the same thing but is FOSS]. Can I use that instead?" and they'd probably be fine with it if it can use the same file format. Its just easier to use the soc arch excuse. Most of my professors have nearly no idea how computers work. If I said it runs Linux, they'd probably ask if I could install Windows to make it work.

@SuperDicq Because most students at my Uni have an M-series Mac, so professors just give up and figure out alternative software. Its much better that they assume I'm using a Mac than believe I am "hindering myself" by using Linux.

Using an ARM laptop is amazing, because if my professor wants me to use shitty old Windows software, "My laptop is ARM, so I can't run that" is a valid excuse, unlike "My laptop runs Linux".

I think the saddest part of the LLM infection of open-source software development is the loss of trust in each other. Beforehand, if somebody submitted some bad code, it could be assumed it was either a mistake or they weren't well-versed enough with the codebase. Nowadays, any code submitted by an unknown party brings immediate scrutiny and a "guilty until proven innocent" mentality. Its a valid defense mechanism, but I will never forgive the corpos for this.

@Jain @hexaheximal One of the major issues of LLMs is that they tie skills to a subscription. Developers have learned how to review code and debate changes effectively, but LLMs actively deskill people and cause them to rely solely on a paid tool. Another major issue is that the code that LLMs output are differently licensed depending on the legal jurisdiction, which can cause legal issues with licensing. Then there is the environmental issue of power and water and land used.

After LLMs go the way of the Metaverse, I wonder if high-ranking FOSS developers will admit they were wrong in using them or argue that they were good when they used them and then they went bad later on. If history is anything to go off of, ego will win.

Is there, like, a term for all these crowd-funded phones coming out that are just Android phones but don't use Android userspace? Like, they normally are just halium phones because the vendors are too lazy to actually upstream drivers, meaning the phone will eventually die when updates become unprofitable to the manufacturer. I need just, like, a good summary word for them. Like FOSS-Washed Phones. Halium slop (but then that sounds mean to the halium project). Corpo Mobislop?

    Dear project leads:

If somebody says: "this thing upsets me", don't go: "well, its never bothered me". You just look like a prick. Its better to consider every genuine user / contributor's gripes instead of assuming them to be a one-off thing. Usually many more people are bothered, but also are not bothered enough to say something.

    Sincerely,
    A not-yet jaded maintainer

@SuperDicq @theorytoe@ak.kyaruc.moe Oh, sorry, I think there is a misunderstanding. By "legitimizing" I meant giving advertising to the project through your usage. People running hyprland seen by others or posting it online (they love their Reddit) show hyprland to others who may *not* have reservations against contributing. Thus supporting hyprland even if they did not mean to contribute.

@SuperDicq @theorytoe@ak.kyaruc.moe Well, yes, you aren't *physically* harming anybody, but by using software from people that allow hate against minorities in their community, you are legitimizing that style of community. That legitimization then makes you complicit in the community itself.

Every time I see somebody boasting about hyprland I have two dueling thoughts. First is that they probably just see a cool-looking wm and wanted to try it out. The second is that they are supporting a very negative community and legitimizing it. The solution is usually to say that that's cool and then explain my reservations about it. Usually people fall into either "oh no I didn't know about that" or "yeah, so what?". Only one of those is worth continuing the conversation.

Cult of the Lamb is such a fun game. Little town builder that then turns into a hack-and-slash rogue-like to continue town building? Yes please. "Please, glorious leader, murder me 🥺", sure! But first gotta make a fun fish stew and pet this little guy mining stone for me. Seriously, game of the year, every year.

Also, they keep releasing content updates that could be entire DLCs for free! The only "DLCs" are new skins for your cultists and a few cosmetic stuff for your cult town thingy. Yay! :3

Hi! Name's Aster. I am an aspiring geologist, do stuff with PostMarketOS, and pretend I have any understanding of the Linux kernel. I also like Halo and Kingdom Hearts. Apparently I mainly work on porting iPhones to Linux now.Luddite.Bump into lamps by night. Will not boost without alt-text.Be compassionate when its hard, don't censor yourself, and wear a mask!!!!I take follow requests and basically the only thing you need is a PFP and a bio.#NoBridge #Linux #PostMarketOS
