Using an ARM laptop is amazing, because if my professor wants me to use shitty old Windows software, "My laptop is ARM, so I can't run that" is a valid excuse, unlike "My laptop runs Linux".

@justsoup@mstdn.social Why is this a valid excuse suddenly?

@justsoup@mstdn.social When I was in uni every teacher that tried to get me to use proprietary software got an hour long unskippable cutscene from me about why proprietary software is bad and should be not allowed in school.
Using GNU/Linux is not "hindering oneself". The free software movement is a belief system. Requiring me to use proprietary software to pass a class is equivalent to forcing a vegan to eat meat or making a pacifist join the army.
If you're persistent enough on this issue they will let you use different software, I promise. -

@SuperDicq Because most students at my Uni have an M-series Mac, so professors just give up and figure out alternative software. Its much better that they assume I'm using a Mac than believe I am "hindering myself" by using Linux.

@justsoup@mstdn.social Of course that's how you start, I only go on a rant if they say no.

@SuperDicq Oh, I could probably say "I'm more used to [program that does the same thing but is FOSS]. Can I use that instead?" and they'd probably be fine with it if it can use the same file format. Its just easier to use the soc arch excuse. Most of my professors have nearly no idea how computers work. If I said it runs Linux, they'd probably ask if I could install Windows to make it work.

@justsoup@mstdn.social If failing a class is what it takes to avoid having to use unethical proprietary software I would gladly fail that class.

@SuperDicq I prefer to stay on the good side of the people that can grade me however they want with no rules...

Honestly, best decision ever, I learned soooo much more by teaching myself and using different software each time. I ended up learning blender, freecad, some typescript and other random things that way, and it was a blast.

I took a few classes that involved basically exclusively Adobe software, or proprietary CAD. One of them, motion graphics, I spent the entire semester using anything but Adobe. We only had to turn in the final work, so I would show up in class, use the classroom computer with Adobe, and then recreate/finish at home with (mostly) free software instead and submit that. Every assignment I also used a different software to make the animation.
SuperDicq repeated this.
