It occurred to me that there were two groups of people that came to Mastodon in November. The first thought Twitter was literally going to shut down and needed virtual methodone for their social media addiction. The second were users dissatisfied with what Twitter had become and jumped at an alternative. I believe it's the second group that have stuck around.
@tursiops@stux We at the Canadian will be our own arbitor of who we block and when. I'm not in favour of giving away that power to every flavour of the month drama movement that pops up. There's been far too many calls to weaponize our fediblocks and I'll resist all of them.
@atomicpoet@oblomov@evan The enemy isn't Meta, and it's not Blue Sky, the enemy is ourselves. Admins are walking out and shuttering instances, gatekeepers are chasing away new users, and inter instance disputes are starting. IMHO These are far more threatening developments than anything going on externally.
@shoq@atomicpoet I've been hammering on this point forever. As soon as #BlueSky let's the barbarians through the gate it's going to be a whole different user experience.
@osma@mike@flipboard.social@mmasnick It's just a numbers game. Back in the late 60s early 70s all moms in North America got together and decided that the only acceptable male names would be Mike, Steve, or Dave.
@mike@flipboard.social@mmasnick I've beat this drum a lot. Everything that Bluesky is proposing can be done right now in Mastodon via the client. Open API and open source allow you to theoretically have a client that could offer you algorithmic curation/moderation of your feeds. You could even have a market place of interchangeable algorithms between clients. Open beats black box.
@Hey_Beth@atomicpoet@fediversenews I just don't find Mastodon that hard honestly. It's different but not difficult. I don't understand why all these super smart tech journalists are having such a brain cramp using Mastodon.
I've noticed a lot of people that complain to me about Mastodon engagement have more followers than follows. It suggests to me they are still stuck in a Twitter mode of trying to game the algorithm. On Mastodon the algorithm is people, you need to establish an active home feed and then participate in two way engagement.
If you assume our findings of 10x reach, Mastodon at 9.5m users has as much reach as almost 100m Twitter users. With this milestone Mastodon currently has 1/3 the reach of Twitter, a remarkable achievement for a purely user supported platform.
? I'm seeing the latest Twitter issue being framed as a bug in a recent character limit expansion feature.
That's crap.
? The error message referred to "daily tweet limit", not "character limit" . Somebody launched unfinished code for a paid tier of twitter, where the unpaid tier would have a daily tweet limit.
