I have a lot of feelings about this poll.

I'm "people I know personally". A lot of my best friends and most steadfast allies are on this network and it means a lot to connect to them here.

There are also a lot of people I know who aren't here. I hope to see them here soon.

I tried out the new #Flipboard experience for #mastodon Here's are my quick thoughts:

- The UI was wonderful! Great job bringing the content from Mastodon into the Flipboard experience.
- The support for different streams was ??? mwah, chef's kiss. Home, local and federated timelines are all available through the interface.
- Performance was great! Few if any spinners or pauses. It felt like a real-time news experience.

I am glad that fediverse.observer counts Brighteon separately from Mastodon because they are clearly different services.

From a UI/UX perspective, they’re nothing alike.

I have three words to say to the White House and all the journalists who’ve said they won’t pay for blue checkmarks.

i opened a little door in an alleyway and it turned out to be a coffee shop with great cheesecake and floor to ceiling bookcases. even the bathroom door is a bookcase.

Good news for everyone here who uses Flipboard on Android: you can now connect your Mastodon account and flip through feeds.

Besides seeing posts from Mastodon feeds, you can also boost, like and reply to them from within the Flipboard app. You can also add content from Mastodon to your Flipboard Magazines, and vice versa: share content from Flipboard with your followers on Mastodon.

We had a few April Fool's jokes on Identi.ca. One year, we launched a few fake social sites like Freelicious and Foursqualour, parodies of existing sites at the time.

Another year, everybody on the network took on new accounts spoofing Twitter celebrities of the time. It is one of my fondest memories of the network.

On Wikitravel, we created a travel guide to the fictional island of San Serriffe one year. It was a lot of fun.

I'm a qualified yes. This tradition is one that's been important to me since my earliest days on the Internet.

I've always liked the gentle, goofy humour that comes from April Fool's Day jokes. And I'm impressed when people make cool hacks for their pranks.

It feels a day where we act like we are all on the same side, and all in on the joke. That this big network isn't something to take too seriously. That there's a straight line connection to that earlier time.

I'm a qualified yes because I don't have the energy recently to do any pranks. But I miss it.

At the time we started OStatus, and to some extent when AP started, there was still a big culture of polling feeds.

For example, feed readers would poll the same feeds hundreds of times per day, because they could never be sure when something would be posted.

The general consensus was that this was a big mistake and that push was the right way to do it.

@rabble and @kellan gave a really important talk at OSCON 2008 called "Beyond REST? Building Data Services with XMPP PubSub".

They talked about how the feed-polling architecture was costing an arm and a leg for publishers with only tiny benefit to users.

I was in the audience and it was a really important inspiration for later work.

I don't need a lecture about decentralization.

"A" people directory is not "the" people directory.

It's not important to have secondary services like people search be as numerous as primary services like Mastodon instances.

What's important is having a few; say, 5 to 10.
