Well, it looks like it's already there!
It's a little weird that they have your Twitter, Facebook, GitHub, ... account information, but you can't search for other people based on their Twitter account (say) and get back their Mastodon account.
That'd be a nice alternative to using the Twitter API and scraping the bio.
I don't need a lecture about decentralization.
"A" people directory is not "the" people directory.
It's not important to have secondary services like people search be as numerous as primary services like Mastodon instances.
What's important is having a few; say, 5 to 10.
We've been using the Twitter API and social graph to help jump-start new users' fediverse social graph. debirdify, movetodon, fedifinder.
It's a vulnerable point for the fediverse, and having other ways to onboard people and help them find their friends' existing fediverse accounts is important.
