@LydiaConwell yep, it seems to have been used historically (although that is somewhat confused by coloured mud that is used decoratively), and it’s recommended as a replacement if you don’t have any sunscreen by outdoorsy types.

John Conway (john@sauropods.win)'s status on Tuesday, 07-May-2024 21:48:44 JST John Conway @aral You mean AI military targeting? That's not what I'm talking about here, I'm an artist talking about art, and is the context most artists are using it in.

John Conway (john@sauropods.win)'s status on Tuesday, 07-May-2024 20:27:22 JST John Conway When I’m browsing artist's bios, I see #NoAI a lot, but there's still a lot number with #NoNFT. It's been an exhausting couple of years, huh?
On the other hand, NFTs turned out to be a bunch of nothing in the end, and I feel like just ignoring the whole thing would have worked.
I feel like maybe this is true of AI ‘art’. It's boring. It doesn't even need a backlash.

John Conway (john@sauropods.win)'s status on Friday, 26-Apr-2024 09:39:02 JST John Conway @darnell Ads can be fitted to content, so it's not like they will be completely irrelevant. TV, radio, and until recently podcasting got by without ad tracking. Meta and Google are massively profitable. Non-tracked ads can be considerably less effective and the'd still profit.

John Conway (john@sauropods.win)'s status on Thursday, 07-Dec-2023 05:33:01 JST John Conway @thomasfuchs is the replies thing a deliberate design decision? If so, that’s crazy. I thought it was a bug or at least accidental.

Especially people building #OpenSource models and tools?

John Conway (john@sauropods.win)'s status on Tuesday, 28-Nov-2023 05:23:55 JST John Conway @apophis @evan It's often used in bad faith, for sure. Strangely, it didn't occur to me that Evan's original toot was a reference to anything in particular. I was talking more generally.

John Conway (john@sauropods.win)'s status on Friday, 07-Jul-2023 01:05:57 JST John Conway For those of us who plan to federate with #Threads, we really need to do a better job of communicating to people that they will be able to interact with Threads from Mastodon, and that it is the superior choice.
Some people here are getting Threads accounts, without realising it will soon be unnecessary. People on Twitter are pretty much in the dark about the whole thing.

John Conway (john@sauropods.win)'s status on Friday, 17-Mar-2023 18:23:09 JST John Conway I've been pretty quiet on #Mastodon recently, but it's not for lack of interest! I’ve been working on my Mastodon-integrated gallery app (codename: Vulcanodon), and making some good progress.
It's a working portfolio site, with tagging, sets, and rudimentary access control. But most importantly, it posts to your Mastodon, and keeps track of which post is associated with an artwork, its, favourites, replies etc.
So it's about 10% done…

John Conway (john@sauropods.win)'s status on Wednesday, 01-Feb-2023 03:27:21 JST John Conway @mike Yea, I'm hoping its a slump after and period of false growth, and real organic growth will return. The truth is though that the Fediverse is just too small for the palaeoart community for example. Growth is needed.
