Today in AI bullshittery:

Nvidia has trained an LLM on their codebase to save senior designers having to answer junior's questions about what some code does.

I don't know how many times i have to say this, but these are not search engines. They are not inference engines. Their answers are 100% "what would be a plausible sounding string of words to respond to that input?" that's it. That's _all_ they do.

@aral yes have. no doesn't nosedive except under well known circumstances that they warn about.

That sounds like a defect to me.

@thomasfuchs I don't _think_ that was it. I have this distinct memory of wiggly (sine-wave like) colorful window borders that looked like tubes as one of the demo screenshots. Not suggesting that that is what the OS would look like but that you could _make_ the OS look like that.

Digging a little more, i think this was _just_ before rhapsody. It's what they were working on when they were still debating if they should buy BeOS or NeXT.

@thomasfuchs my memory is that they were struggling with making the next os (next not NeXT) and it was dragging, so they were putting these screenshots to help keep people excited about impending mac coolness, but that no-one ever got to actually use it outside of apple.

BUT I could be totally misremembering the timeline.

@thomasfuchs hah. just edited my post after stumbling across that. I think it WAS part of rhapsody but i'm not finding anything like what I'm remembering in screenshots i'm seeing for rhapsody. Not sure if there was a special name for the theming stuff or if it was just bundled up in the OS itself without a separate name.

@thomasfuchs Just before Apple bought NeXT they they were working on a new version of the OS and putting out screenshots of the amazingly customizable / themeable UI. Like ridiculously wiggly window edges and stuff like that. Alas, they bought NeXT and it never shipped.

Do you remember what that new UI stuff was called? Was it just Rhapsody? or was there a special name for the theming stuff?

I want to take a moment to talk about code #accessibility. Like How accessible your _source code_ is for your fellow #programming

Practically speaking I count as a "Low vision" user. My need for larger fonts means that lines wrap earlier for me than most users. Wrapping sucks, so when i write code I typically use 80 characters as an upper limit to width. There are computing history reasons for 80 but it also just works.

@thomasfuchs @tonybyrne @pdjstone I always just assumed that none of the os 9 stuff carried on after they switched to the stuff from next. I assume there's some similar functionality that carried forward but i figured they just rewrote from scratch. Was there much that could actually be ported?

should also be noted that people can't make PRs to Patchwork. The repo has been archived for nearly 2 years now. Sure, you could fork it, but folks would have done that ages ago if there was enough interest.

As far as I can tell Manyverse seems like the only SSB app being worked on. One could argue Patchfox too but it's hampered by needing some back-end thing and those are all abandoned or don't work anymore for me. :/

I've just posted a quick blog post explaining why all Mastodon people should be very concerned about "Mask Group" having bought up 3 of the largest mastodon instances, and why folks on those instances should be moving their accounts ASAP.

tl;dr there's no logical reason to buy them that doesn't hurt them and us in the long run.
