I’m not, but a lot of my friends here are. Like for example that awesome musician, Andre Louis from London. (follow him if you don’t already, lots of fun stuff, music wise)
Here’s a thread he posted a while ago and while it’s not specifically about emojis and symbols, but usernames with cutesy fonts, it’s essentially the same thing.
firstly, if my instance blocks annihilation, a bot hosted there can’t access it to scrape info. So I’m guessing the person who received this message is on an instance that doesn’t block it.
And if someone even says they got their info from a tool run by one of the known bad instances I would think it’s pretty clear where they’re coming from.
except annihilation is on the most basic 100% list at Oliphant’s and if a server doesn’t at the very least use that list, I don’t know what to tell you.
Here’s me, unable to do mental arithmetics in spite of trying hard for nine years at school. Then we were allowed to use electronic calculators (those old-fashioned thingies before mobile phones existed) and suddenly I became good at maths! I began to really enjoy it even , and I loved algebra - maths with letters, woohoo!
So dyscalculia doesn’t keep you from understanding the logic of maths, it just keeps you from crunching numbers 🙂
I’m on a single user instance, and I don’t recommend it. Especially not for someone coming from the biggest instance there is. You’ll be shocked to find yourself on a desert island. The lack of backfilling makes it a very frustrating experience, and yes there are workarounds, and yes it takes dedication to implement them and keep your blocklists up to date etc.
Go find a nice medium sized instance and give its admin a fiver a month. Much less hassle and better federation.
The relationship between numbers and my brain is one of mutual dislike.
My brain doesn’t do them. I swear I don’t even know what numbers are. As a kid, I learned mental arithmetics like a poem. I recited it in every test, for every exercise. What I wrote was mostly correct, but time was always up before I had finished even half of it… 1/3
maths was my poorest subject until we were allowed to use electronic calculators. Late 70s. And then suddenly, it became fun! I loved algebra so much. Being able to do maths with my good old friends: letters!
At that point, I chose maths as a favourite subject even. I loved how unambiguous and logical and elegant it was. Just don’t expect me to do numbers.
The safest space I know is mastodon.art really. @Curator relentlessly silences or prunes away all connections to anyone and any server that would compromise the safety of its very diverse users.
Maybe check it out. Some art content behind CWs but really nothing to worry about there IMO.
And before you decide on one browse a server’s local and federated timelines where I’ve always found plenty of stuff to report… just saying.
as someone on a small self-hosted, single user instance, I’ve found groups to be absolutely indispensable to help with federation. Very much appreciated your tip back then. Hashtags don’t do that at all.
When you upload your lists on your new server, pay attention to the drop down menu. It defaults to “following” so select block if you upload your block list. Just saying 🤣
good choice, and welcome! „news“ is a broad term. I’d say it depends a bit on what corner of the world you’re in 😉
Personally, I’m a big fan of RSS feeds for news. If you’re on iOS, get NetNewsWire (free and perfect) and subscribe to all the news sites directly that you don’t want to miss.
Here on Mastodon, @feditips is a good account to follow. The other day they posted a whole list of news accounts, for example. I didn’t bookmark it, sadly.
It almost feels a bit exotic but - no, I never had an account on that “birdsite”, even though I like birds. Simply came here and loved it! When the server I first signed up on was shut down, I set up this little instance of one.Chicken keeper, dog lover, photo enthusiast without decent camera, would-be-smallholder-if-only-I-had-more-time, ex-beekeeper, seed saver, writer, publisher. Curious, enthusiastic, believe in the power of kindness.-> June 18th is Autistic Pride Day
