What I love about Masto replies:
Sometimes I'll post something like "Here is a way we might improve things slightly."

And someone will reply "I disagree completely."

Fair enough. But then a few minutes later they reply to themselves:

"You are a jackass! Go away troll!"

And I'll think "That escalated. Should I block?" Then they reply again:

"Wrong! Phoenicians didn't even have access to titanium!"

    And I'll think "🤨Wait... what?"

    Then I get it that they're arguing with someone I can't see🤷🏿♂️

@mekkaokereke So in this situation there's a "broken" thread, but you get the new reply because you're mentioned, and the mysterious toot starts with some list of @-mentions that contains a user you've blocked? I guess Mastodon could do something to highlight blocked user @-mentions...

A similar problem happens in IRC. I /ignore someone, and then someone else says something rude that is apparently in reply to something reasonable, and it turns out I'm just missing the intervening trolling. :-/ There's also an option in my client for "...and also hide any replies to ignored users" but that sometimes just makes it worse!

@goatsarah Humm... wouldn't the mention in the "missing" toot cause the toot to be sent over?

My understanding is that any direct interaction you make (fave, boost, mention) causes a request to be sent from one server to the other, whereas other visibility (federated timeline) is based on who is following whom.

I am going to start using “Wrong! Phoenicians didn't even have access to titanium!" as my rejoinder to everything now.
