    @Lady_Penelope you don't need to pay the licence for radio, but mum does because radio 3 remains a major source of her music, the BBC orchestras are still going, and I listen to a handful of radio 4 origs I'd really miss. Otherwise, yeah major reform needed. Also the gardening progs on TV. But that's a sore point in her state.

    @HebrideanHecate thing about this is we do absolutely need to crack down on this - there's two things wrong. 1. using the careworker visas to bring in women who end up working for illegal wages in other sectors and 2. conditions being so bad in care that only desperate immigrants can be made to fill the places.

    there are so many care agencies, and care homes, that are owned and run by men (and some women) from India, various African countries who are here to exploit everyone concerned. The local authorities payments. the NHS payments. the families. And the workers can't leave one care home/agency to go to another better run, with better wages because the bosses act like the slavegang masters - with-holding passports, threatening to get them deported, keeping crews with very little English so they are dependant on the bosses for everything.

    Set against that are plenty not like that at all of course, there's good an bad everywhere, but the push to make it an immigrant dominated profession should tell everyone there's a lot of dodgy shit goin on.

    HOWEVER rescinding the visas does NOTHING AT ALL to address any of the actual shortages or problems with care sector. It's all very well saying we should be training people here, but at zero hours and shit money, no-one wants to do it.

    Now the Tuesday parcel says "out for delivery" don't know when yet, so whoever it is going to have to move what is still blocking my door from last night. I'm relieved my plants won't be stuck in a warehouse or van through the holiday weekend.

    @astarsscreams @LostInCalifornia fuckers! I used the safe place notification on the website - which I got email confirmation of. And the guy delivered at 8:54pm and left it on the front door step. not behind the brown bin. AND it's not my plants, it's only the compost. so I have a giant (bigger than contents) OPEN cardboard box with 2x 20L of peat free compost blocking my front door.

    Great.

    the delivered notification says "front porch" I don't have a porch (and that means something different here than in US anyway, waaaaaay smaller)

    Plants seem to be in a different delivery for tuesday. argh.

    @Haleakalacrater @HebrideanHecate @Lady_Penelope social housing for rent owned by councils and housing associations, Thatcher's govt brought in the right for tenants to buy the houses they were paying rent in. At massive discounts. Many sold them on and they got bought by private landlords who are now renting them out at hugely increased rents. Fewer social houses got built because they lost their investment with them getting bought soon after.

    Scotland got rid of this some years ago, but whole of UK badly affected in it's wake.

    I think the issue is that all the above rows didn't include the dropped stitch, so picking it up would mean tightening the stitches around it all the way up. it dropped and caught because of the sticky yarn, but wasn't noticed for 40 rows.

    there is a health condition that gets labelled as fake, that only certain types of people have it, or claim to have it - absolute classic case of stigma.

    so instead of recognising and tackling that stigma, people who have it say they "don't think of themselves as having that" because that'll help.

    multiply across many things.

    it's not helpful. it's bloody annoying to those of us in the trenches.
