@freemo @georgetakei I suppose the same applies to R's on gun rights. Why haven't the Republicans put in some strong gun rights protection laws? Because the 2nd Amendment is something people will vote single issue on. Likewise reproductive rights.

@georgetakei So why didn't the Democrats pass a right to choose law when they had the chance? They apparently saw this as a useful wedge issue.

@freemo As I understand it soldiers, reservists, and veterans can more easily have guns. The kibbutz people, some did and some did not. They are going to ease up on it now though.

@freemo Now if the Israelis had a pro-gun attitude all along, Hamas would not have got far into the kibbutz. In the one with an organized armed defense, over 20 Hamas wound up face down in the dirt.

I think the "complex" gun situation in Israel has to do with the Israeli Arabs being full citizens, and yet being seen as a threat. So there a lot of arbitrary discretion.

Since the Arabs are not required to serve in the army, veterans have the easiest access to guns.

@sj_zero Having a "no politics at work" policy seems about as common sense as having a "no ass grabbing at work" policy. In both cases, you are going to deter the people you really don't want, and you will have a lawyer-safe reason to get rid of people who cause trouble.

@chrisg @aral @laura I've written a few projects based on "I don't like the way things are done so I am going to write a way I like the politics of" and while they worked technically, I couldn't get people to use them. Lesson learned. Now working on a project that will be just useful.

@chrisg I run plenty of mysql instances, including on a Raspberry Pi for development. If used on a small scale it just works and requires no management.

Android has SQLITE built in - that is what holds your text messages - and that just works too.

What do we need to fix specifically?

@jeffcliff @arghavansallesmdphd @TamaraHinz Often when they try to talk about what they differ on, they talk past each other. That was evident in this twitter thread where you had pro-vaxxers and anti-vaxxers posting two different overlapping threads with no actual discussion taking place.

You must have encountered this in talking religion and atheism too, it often shows up there.

@owncast Ublock Origin seems to work well for Youtube. Every now and then I mistakenly open YT in an unprotected browser and recoil in horror.

If you are using Android. Kiwi browser is like desktop Chrome, and will run Ublock Origin.

@jeffcliff @sj_zero When you try to research politically hot topics (COVID vaccine health effects, transgender medical treatment health effects, and global warming are big ones) you will find there is no reliable source of truth.

There are two sets of sources with wildly different data, divergent analysis of the same studies, and a tendency to kick out anyone who is not on side.

And both sides of each debate are willing to fudge data to prove their points.

Maybe AI will resolve this someday?

@jeffcliff @sj_zero If they try to research these topics, most people will just go away more confused than they started out, and probably do nothing.

Each side will say "you cannot listen to those (greedy pharma people/irrational anti-vaxxers).

Other than using violence to suppress one side or the other (which some people want) there doesn't seem to be any way to drive this toward honest consensus.

Same for the other political issues. Humans just cannot reason about tribal identity markers.

@urusan when a thing becomes so infamously bad that there are people who specialize in getting you out of that thing, how do people continue to get into that thing?

This applies to timeshares, MLM, heroin, debt, and cults.

I saw one of these get out of timeshare booths at the fair once.

@brandon @cstross @aethylred Ames flunked a polygraph and kept his job. Claimed he was under stress. So even the people who run polygraphs don't trust them. If you can get some anxiolytics you can pass one too.

I wonder if functional MRI and deep learning will give us a real lie detector in the near future?

Anyone who thinks there are good guys in American politics (outside of the occasional local politician who has not been through the filter yet) doesn't get it.

America is just the strong arm of a financial cartel. The British used to perform this function once, but now it is the USA. It is a criminal enterprise, not a government.
