…then one of the existing parties will dry up and blow away, leaving you back with only two parties, and all the problems that come with that.
Our “first past the post” election system guarantees this. If you want more than two parties, then you have to alter the way our elections work.
What I'm suggesting is that if Dems are unwilling to be a proper opposition party, then we might as well go through the process of building up another party to replace them.
Dems have been so useless as an opposition party that I myself have advocated for starting a third party.
I think Americans should understand what this involves. It absolutely would leave Republicans in power while we build a third party.
A lot of people trivially suggest starting a third party as though this alone will fix what is wrong. The problem with this thinking is that it has been tried in the past.
What ends up happening is that if a third party becomes successful…
Senate Democrats: Hey look, those elections just showed that the people are behind us! Now is the perfect time to cave in on the shutdown and give the Republicans everything they want!
In case you didn't see the recent Superman movie, it featured a dictator who was an awful lot like Netanyahu and/or Putin. Hawkgirl dropped him from a great height, presumably to his death.
I apologize ahead of time for getting any pronouns wrong. If I do, I promise it's not on purpose, I'm just old and slow.I know I'm supposed to be civil, but I make no promises if I interact with any fascists, white supremacists, or other far-right savages. Expect me to say a lot about politics.I'm anticapitalist, but not crazy about Marx's solution.I'm Japanese, Norwegian, and Swedish. I like cooking and nerd stuff.
