Our “first past the post” election system guarantees this. If you want more than two parties, then you have to alter the way our elections work.

What I'm suggesting is that if Dems are unwilling to be a proper opposition party, then we might as well go through the process of building up another party to replace them.

I think Americans should understand what this involves. It absolutely would leave Republicans in power while we build a third party.

A lot of people trivially suggest starting a third party as though this alone will fix what is wrong. The problem with this thinking is that it has been tried in the past.
