ChatGPT prompts use 10x more power than Google searches. That is what I have seen reported several times lately. CNBC did a story on the higher energy usage and cost of AI facilities.
Microsoft tried putting datacenter underwater but discontinued that effort due to higher maintenance costs. Using a large body of water is a good way to handle heat and reduce energy consumption.
What I am curious about is combining hydroelectric dams and large reservoirs with cooling server facilities. The flow of water which goes through the turbines could go through a series of pipes to cool down large facilities first before going through turbines to generate power. #AI#ChatGPT
@renchap Generally I expect contributions would be a labor of love. But also the work that is put into supporting ActivityPub apps can also be used to give talks at meetups and conferences. The maker of @IceCubesApp has done this and shared all of the code on GitHub. I am sure he can leverage that work when setting pricing with clients or negotiating an offer with an employer.
Personally I have a monthly donation going to my server hosts. I'd like all server hosts to pool part of their donations to fund a core team which can dedicate time toward completing features and fixing bugs which are the highest priority to the community. And I'd be happy to kick in donations to this effort.
@Gargron It is incredible if it is obvious the benefits of the net effects. Tumblr could adopt the WordPress model of having most of the software free and Open Source for anyone to host their own instance, or offer a paid hosting service that handles all updates and maintenance. Generating revenue from 5% of 3 million is better than 100% of 100k.
"WordPress now powers 43.3% of websites, with a 65.1% share in the CMS market.”
@atomicpoet@lacouvee What service that supports ActivityPub but not Mastodon can I follow right now from a Mastodon client? I don’t know if I’ve done this yet. I’m still new to it.
@atomicpoet I’m following @fediversenews already. That’s cool. That’s a good example of what ActivityPub can do. I think micro servers that just publish would be very useful, like public transit and severe weather updates. I could follow relevant zip codes. I’d like to run such services which consume public data and share on ActivityPub.
@atomicpoet@Gargron The Fediverse can copy FB groups, events and shared photo albums. It would allow so many people to finally to get off the platform.
@atomicpoet Perhaps. I just had a look and it does not seem to be as far along as Mastodon which now has many apps. I use @ivory and @IceCubesApp which are quite good in terms of usability and visual design. I may be an early adopter but it will be hard to convince others to get onboard.
