Evening thought: the amount of funding Mastodon got this year is probably less than the salary for one of the top engineers working on Threads.
Not sure what to make of it, but maybe it helps understand why things take time to be implemented.

Also a reason why we want to focus on getting more money in 2024 so we can hire more people and iterate more quickly on Mastodon ✊

@ar3h1d they have twice as much full time developere working in their AcrivityPub implementation (a small part of their product) than we have full time devs on Mastodon

@renchap if anything, Threads seems slower to me. 😄

@halla having worked at an Adobe office, I can probably confirm 😀
But it does not mean they make better software than some OSS projects 🤐

@renchap The amount of money Adobe probably spents on toilet paper for its offices is, even after work from home, probably more than the funding #krita gets 🙂

@renchap Honestly, I am more amazed at how much @Mastodon has done given how little funding they have. On one hand, it makes me feel inspired by what you can do with so little. On the other hand, it makes me wonder what can be done with more money. On another hand, it makes me laugh at how much money big tech companies spend to get where they are.

Thanks for all of your work and for the rest of @MastodonEngineering @Gargron

@renchap I thought about donating, but there was no option for a one time donation at Patreon?

@chrishering33 i would expect the annual total package for a top engineer at Meta to be close to 7 figures

@renchap I’m a little bit shocked after reading this. I would expect a good engineer to earn six figures with a Meta company, Mastodon didn’t make six figures all year in donations? I did my part, believe you me 😅

@andymouse I probably donated 1000 hours of my time to the project this year. This is not sustainable and we need to be able to pay people to work on Mastodon.

Anyone who does it for the money will do a bad job.

That's why I always go for projects where people work for free. Then I donate money to them. Everyone has to eat, but nothing good comes out of capitalism.

@brennansv I donated more than 1000 hours of work to Mastodon this year (and have been able to get paid for some more).
This is not sustainable in the long run.

@renchap Generally I expect contributions would be a labor of love. But also the work that is put into supporting ActivityPub apps can also be used to give talks at meetups and conferences. The maker of @IceCubesApp has done this and shared all of the code on GitHub. I am sure he can leverage that work when setting pricing with clients or negotiating an offer with an employer.

Personally I have a monthly donation going to my server hosts. I'd like all server hosts to pool part of their donations to fund a core team which can dedicate time toward completing features and fixing bugs which are the highest priority to the community. And I'd be happy to kick in donations to this effort.

I can't stop thinking that if we had a decentralized way to donate, directly and automatically from our bank to your bank, more people would support FOSS projects and media. a protocol that would allow us to manage it all in the same banking apps we already use. right now, it's a bunch of third party systems and corporations, exactly what we're all trying to get rid of.
