It is possible to not gain much weight. I knew a lot of fat people my age when I was a teenager, but most teenagers are bean-pole skinny. I know it's possible to stay in shape, but this still doesn't change what the average numbers are for all people across human history. Even silverback gorillas have recognizable "dad-bod". So the Linux conference is selling shirts that are way larger in 2008 than they were in 1999, it's probably because the demographic skewed older.

(I am actually losing weight. I ate a bowl of peanut butter after lunch yesterday in order to slow this process. Like, dumped about a quarter of a jar of peanut butter into a bowl and stirred in some unsweetened cocoa powder and had that with popcorn.)
