no joke we had a trash 80 running our main gate when i worked at a storage facility back in 2006 or so.

I don't doubt that old-ass machines continue to survive in these weird POS systems, though. Same TRS-80 might still be in that facility. -

The TPi2 that FSE is on now, though, you've gotta plug it into pins on the board, so I have these 9-pin DSub connectors that are solder-friendly that I've been thinking of using to get a connector onto the back but since I only need it when the thing can't get on the network, it's not super useful to do.✙ dcc :pedomustdie: :phear_slackware: likes this. -

Apparently it's hard to get X to just be monochrome, like "Do this monitor as amber" and most monochrome displays are either e-ink or used medical gear. I *think* you could probably get a kinda monochrome display by patching EDID (which is actually doable; I had to for an old monitor that pretended to have speakers but did not) but I haven't tried that. -

iconv doesn't do a *perfect* job but it does a pretty good job. What do you use to view them? They seem to look reasonable in urxvt (top) and mostly passable Plan 9's vt(1) (bottom). I remember the little fuckin' Java guy. (He is sus nowadays, frfr god cap.)

@jae @Doll @Folklore @Sui @zero They come with a lifetime guarantee; it takes a while but if you ship it back to Japan, they will fix it for you for free. I've never had one even slightly break. I have some wear and tear on the spacebar on one of them, that's it. All the keys respond the same as when I first got it. I fuckin' love these things. I mainly got it because of the Unix layout; at the time my last Sun keyboard died (*those* things were unreliable by the time the Type 6 and Type 7 came out; they felt good but the circuts were on thin layers of acrylic or something and they'd spontaneously fry after a certain age), they were the only manufacturer I knew of that would sell me a keyboard with the Unix layout and a USB connector.
That having been said, if you've built your own, it's probably going to be a closer fit to what you want. They're not QMK-compatible or anything. Just very good keyboards. -

Yep, broadcast TV gear uses the same rack size. That is the two screens on there, that's supposed to be video gear, they have a bunch of buttons so you can make sure that the picture is framed correctly and I just use them like regular monitors.

I don't like it so much except that 3:4 is actually a good ratio for emulating DS games. It's like that because this monitor doesn't fit this desk the other way. (The reason that one is 4:3 is not video games, surprisingly, but man pages. Plan 9 has a nice setup for piping them through troff/eqn/page to view them typeset. I have used barrier on the DevTerm/uConsole a few times for, like, doing the work on the DevTerm and then having a browser with documentation on the uConsole. (Wide screen nice for code, 2-3 columns in acme, then the uConsole was good for reading, keyboard is nicer on the DevTerm.) by the time i do that (and i've tried this in the past on a temp basis) i feel it's better to get a full size keyboard. i looked at the chinese-board dcc suggested it may work but some claims of the switch sockets breaking.
