     Also yeah no cannabis is addictive. Withdrawal is pretty mild but it's still there.
     
     However it's important to separate physical dependency and mental dependency.
     
     It's only really hard to quit when there's a mental dependency.
     
     I'm not nearly as addicted to weed as diabetic are addicted to insulin. Just a bunch of druggos shooting up all the time if you ask me. They have no shame either.

     Ironically it was Richard Edlund, an ILM founder, who did that effect AND designed the Star Trek title typeface, but by 1987 he had left the company to found Boss Films (which did Ghostbusters' effects) so he wasn't around to set them straight.

     Incidentally, you know how the "computer" model of the city was done in Escape from New York, right? (It was cheaper to cover the models with white tape so they looked like vector images, then shine a green light on them.) Alex Jones has been using these backgrounds that look a lot like those, but not quite; it turns out that they are intentional, as a reference to the movie, but to avoid licensing issues they generated their own instead of borrowing footage. So the effects from a movie intended to imitate a computer display were then imitated by an actual computer for the show.

     Makes me think just how good movie sounds were when foley artists made them by watching and rewatching the finished film projected without audio in a studio while doing stuff like whacking bundles of celery with one of a half dozen different lengths of 2" dowel to match the picture. Now you have a dude sitting at the same computer workstation as a video editor scrubbing through audio tracks inserting and adjusting the perfectly synthesized "leg_punch_02.wav" file.

     Yeah, Rick Beato said that this was more or less what killed rock: the drummer doesn't drift any more because some guy in a back room with Beat Detective perfectly quantizes every snare and every kick, then snaps the vocalist to the grid, the guitar, the bass, so it's got a mechanical regularity and it sounds completely lifeless. He proceeded to just swap drums from one track with drums from another and then guitar from a third and you couldn't tell, everything is perfectly sync'd.

     Impossible to forget. I didn't see any after the first one, but (I'm probably dating myself) my brother and our friend and I lost our minds over that movie. Tore through the book, bought a hardcover of the next book, nearly filled out all the trading cards, VHS, notebooks full of colored-pencil velociraptors. (I don't know how my brother and I survived the family road trip to the Smithsonian, I'm pretty sure we were unbearable enough that any sane adult would have tossed us off a bridge.)

The artists would effectively perform the sounds, banging on high tension tower support lines, moving a microphone around a defective TV monitor, and recording the walrus at the zoo.

     @judgedread Oh, yeah, I've been mostly watching that kind of thing, a lot of Arnold's old stuff (the first two Terminators, Total Recall, the Running Man), Alien, Romero's stuff. Great stuff, stuff I'd rather rewatch than most of what's being churned out now. I wonder if that's part of the reason anime and indie films are so popular the last ten or fifteen years, a lot of the big movies are stagnant. I got tricked into seeing Oppenheimer and by the time "Read to me like one of your Sanskrit girls" happened, I wanted to assault whoever was operating the projector, but that was probably also a machine.

     It's awful. When I used to go to church, I played bass with the band... When one of the many drummers quit going, we played with a computer generated drum beat for a time, and it made me never want to pick up the bass again.

     @mord @judgedread @Christmas_Man Yeah, a normal drummer drifts a little, 170bpm, 150bpm, the bass hangs back a little sometimes, it gives the song a real feeling. The drummer is basically providing samples for a mixer to treat like a drum machine now; even in the 90s you started hearing bands complain about overproduction or that their album didn't sound like what they played.

     I can get behind how much easier it is for the producer to mix individual tracks together when finishing a song, and it's faster/cheaper/etc due to less mistakes, but I much prefer the sound of a band playing the song together at once when recording.

     @mord @judgedread @Christmas_Man Yeah, the thing about the mistakes is that sometimes they go somewhere interesting. You work and rework a song and sometimes it improves the song but in any case, it improves the songs on the following album.
     
     The other thing Beato covered (might have been a different video, and this I don't know for certain and only have his video to go on, so grain of salt) was that the guideline for most studios was that they'd sign a deal for five albums and develop the band without expecting the first couple of albums to pay off, but the studios now have the songs written by guys that wrote hit songs in the 80s/90s and then have a producer quantize it and pitch-correct it and the band is really just a bunch of faces.

     Still, kind of a flat, terrible movie. It felt like a TikTok nightmare, all people taking themselves more seriously than their previous actions warranted, and presenting a boring phantasmagoria. (I saw Interstellar and I think that guy's only good at making movies if his brother writes them.)
     
     But I mean that the big-budget movies being all completely terrible; not necessarily the special effects, but Oppenheimer was a soulless dry-hump. Watching it felt exactly the same as everyone standing in a row near the cubicles and mumble-singing "Happy Birthday" to the assistant director of HR while a different middle-manager cuts up a day-old "manager's special" cake from the grocery store, and everyone's pretending that something fun is happening.

     Total Recall was kind of amazing. Three different latex Schwarzenegger heads!
     
     I saw Land of the Dead and this made me distressed that Romero had stooped to making cheesy Romero rip-offs. He had complained that Day of the Dead had this expansive script and it was going to be (I swear) "the 'Gone with the Wind' of zombie movies" and that he had to cut everything but Day of the Dead was incredible. So he'd said that Land of the Dead was closer to what he had in mind and I think, like, someone needs to make sure he has less money so that he goes back to writing interesting characters that do interesting things against a backdrop of random Pennsylvania villagers painted blue.

     @p Carpenter never founded a genre. On the other hand he is a much more technically skilled director. He drifted off big Hollywood movies. Romero never overcame his B-movie origins.
     
     Notice that Carpenter's films are almost all widescreen. That's a trick - it was a special aperture that exposed shorter frames on the same film stock, so you got 1.5 or so times as much footage from the same length of celluloid AND it has that epic widescreen look. The new finer grained 1970s film stocks made this possible.
     
     Also Carpenter was a very early adopter of the Steadicam, indeed Halloween was the first place most saw Steadicam work, the Woody Guthrie bio where it glided out having done poorly.

     Friday the 13th took the concept and ran with it, but no one else did. Freddy is a spirit, he's not walking around in the real world.
     
     Film stocks used to be a really big deal, and entire genres would rise and fall based on market fluctuations in army surplus film, and the price of silver for black and white. Night of the Living Dead made it just under the wire in 1968 when a major feature could still be in black and white and the stock was dirt cheap just before precious metals ran up in response to inflation in the early 70s.

     Carpenter combined elements of serial killer, gore, the contemporary supernatural style of Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist with what I think is the most powerful element - setting it where almost everyone lived in the 1970s - the suburbs.

Freddy Krueger, Michael Meyers, Jason Voorhees, even the shark from Jaws, were all essentially proxies for the nigger boogeyman that lurked in the dark on the other side of every American 8 mile road.
     
     Horror franchises all fail miserably nowadays because there no longer exists a finite border between nigger city and white suburb. Niggers forced into every white neighborhood and every white street in America at gunpoint by the kike-occupied government and white self-defense against nigger predation is a federal crime. Horror movies are dead because there is no fear that Freddy Krueger could elicit in white audiences that is greater than the horror of having to live cheek and jowl with invasive niggers will very well chimpout and rape and murder without warning.
