Film stocks used to be a really big deal, and entire genres would rise and fall based on market fluctuations in army surplus film, and the price of silver for black and white. Night of the Living Dead made it just under the wire in 1968 when a major feature could still be in black and white and the stock was dirt cheap just before precious metals ran up in response to inflation in the early 70s.
