    Also the crazy serial killer can be traced back to M with Peter Lorre, and the US version to Psycho. The gruesome R to X rated style is founded by Hershell Gordon Lewis with Blood Feast, then becomes art with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

    Carpenter combined elements of serial killer, gore, the contemporary supernatural style of Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist with what I think is the most powerful element - setting it where almost everyone lived in the 1970s - the suburbs.

    Friday the 13th took the concept and ran with it, but no one else did. Freddy is a spirit, he's not walking around in the real world.

    Film stocks used to be a really big deal, and entire genres would rise and fall based on market fluctuations in army surplus film, and the price of silver for black and white. Night of the Living Dead made it just under the wire in 1968 when a major feature could still be in black and white and the stock was dirt cheap just before precious metals ran up in response to inflation in the early 70s.

    @p Carpenter never founded a genre. On the other hand he is a much more technically skilled director. He drifted off big Hollywood movies. Romero never overcame his B-movie origins.

    Notice that Carpenter's films are almost all widescreen. That's a trick - it was a special aperture that exposed shorter frames on the same film stock, so you got 1.5 or so times as much footage from the same length of celluloid AND it has that epic widescreen look. The new finer grained 1970s film stocks made this possible.

    Also Carpenter was a very early adopter of the Steadicam, indeed Halloween was the first place most saw Steadicam work, the Woody Guthrie bio where it glided out having done poorly.
