Did Nolan actually intend for this movie to be an anti-mass immigration tract? Apparently certain rightwing fans of Nolan’s Odyssey liken the film itself to a Trojan Horse: Woke on the outside, but on the inside containing a message straight out of Camp of the Saints. Personally, I think this is pure Cope: the Christopher Nolan who glorified a Jewish communist in Oppenheimer, and who portrayed a scary black criminal as more noble and moral than White cops in The Dark Knight, in no way wishes for White people to rise up against the brown hordes. And yet, the message his movie is pushing would absolutely justify such actions, whether you see this as Homer having the last laugh, art escaping its artist or clueless Hollywood liberals not understanding the implications of their ideas.
Purely in terms of drama, Odysseus’s return and revenge is also thoroughly satisfying and cathartic, and in my opinion redeems much of what came before it. Even ignoring all its other problems, the opening hour presented me with a depressing movie filled with ugliness and non-redemptive suffering – but later on I discovered a strong emotional and even moral core that shone a light in the darkness. The story is both a tragedy and a triumph; despite his best efforts, Odysseus can’t save any of his men, and he doesn’t get to see his son grow up. Perhaps some of his dubious decisions early during his voyage was self-destructive acts, borne out of guilt over his actions during the war. However, ultimately the king does return, filling the hearts of his faithful family and servants with hope and courage, and overcomes both his inner demons and his physical enemies.
I also think it bears mentioning that while A LOT of the hate this movie has gotten is fully justified, some of the criticism is not simply uncharitable, but inaccurate. Take the existence of the gods for example: Yes, none of them are shown in the flesh in this movie. No, that does NOT mean that they actually don’t exist in this adaptation. Ignoring all the other supernatural elements, you simply can’t reasonably dismiss everything that happens to Odysseus as mere coincidences, similarly to how while Exodus: Gods and Kings (I’m not a Ridley Scott fanboy, I swear!) did present naturalistic explanations for the hardships Egypt endured, the story just comes across as absurd if God ISN’T pulling the strings.
Consider the following: Odysseus eventually submits to divine judgement, setting out on a flimsy raft and letting the angry Poseidon lash him with the sea’s waves while trusting that Zeus won’t let him die. In Troy (2004), characters who trusted in the gods invariably ended up dead. By contrast, in Nolan’s Odyssey this leap of faith and show of humility results in Odysseus FINALLY making it back home.
Also, and this is a far smaller issue overall, but given my fondness for dogs I just have to call this out: Disparu claimed that Odysseus seemingly didn’t give a shit about the death of his faithful dog Argos. No. Just not true. Odysseus being briefly reunited with his faithful doggo, who stayed alive all these years just to see his master again one last time, is absolutely given the emotional weight it deserved, and Odysseus’s final request that the dog be buried with respect (after having been abused and degraded by the suitors) is all he can do at that moment, since he’s still hiding his true identity. But I don’t see how you could possibly watch that scene in good faith and come away thinking that Odysseus’ wasn’t moved by his dog’s love and loyalty.
Nolan’s Odyssey finishes strong, but unless you’re going with the 4D Chess Cope theory, you can’t gloss over all its missteps and compromises. A lot of its strengths are ultimately due to its source material, and as an adaptation of that immortal work, it gets more things wrong than right. On the whole it's a pretty Bad adaptation of a truly Great story. However, I do feel that it gets some of the BIG things right, and for me personally that kinda saves the movie.
I’m probably the first ever person to make this comparison, but Nolan’s Odyssey actually reminds me a lot of Metroid Prime 4: it’s an undeniable disappointment, some of the creative decisions are completely indefensible, and the fans screaming Betrayal are ultimately justified in their outrage. At the same time however, there’s just far too much of actual value here for me to ultimately feel comfortable grabbing a pitchfork and joining the angry mob. You could argue that all the genuine talent involved makes the failures all the more unforgivable; personally, those failures make me sad rather than angry. While Metroid Prime 4 was a commercial failure, Nolan’s Odyssey is a hit – and I ultimately feel equally ambivalent about both outcomes. -

For the first hour the movie’s portrayal of Odysseus was just weird. He’s supposed to be this Great and Wise man, yet keeps making wrong and even stupid decisions that eventually lose him the trust and loyalty of his crew (we’re not talking one lone, but disastrous act of Hubris here). And no, it’s not that the movie sets out to “expose” Odysseus as a fraud – it ultimately does validate him as a Hero! The movie’s early portrayal of Odysseus actually brought to mind Ridley Scott’s unhinged and incoherent depiction of Napoleon, though Damon never outright disgraces himself the way Joaquin Phoenix repeatedly did as Napoleon. Even so, as written during the early stages of his voyage, Odysseus comes across not as complex, but schizophrenic – his behavior and actions simply don’t match not just the man we’re told he is, but the man he’s at various other points shown to be.
However, for me the movie does actually begin redeeming Odysseus (and itself) when it gets to the part with Circe: not only does it have Odysseus outsmart the sorceress and save his men, but it gets across just how much he cares for the wellbeing of the crew, despite their earlier pseudo-mutiny. From there on the qualities of the original story start decisively overpowering Nolan’s bad and subversive adaptation choices, while some of his trademark storytelling quirk actually begin paying dividends: most obviously, having Odysseus gradually remember his past as Calypso becomes willing to let him go very much justifies a non-sequential narrative structure, gradually revealing to us just why it has taken him so long to return home from Troy. Moreover, all the time spent in Ithaca with Telemachus and Penelope makes the eventual payoff that much sweeter. As for Odysseus himself, while Matt Damon could never pull off the Trickster King Odysseus, he finally finds his footing portraying a weary war veteran who eventually learns to forgive himself and reclaim his birthright.
And it really is this final stretch of the movie that actually salvages it in my eyes – and not just as entertainment either! I think it’s time for me to give out my Based Morality Score now: -3/+2. The first half should come as no surprise, but the second half will no doubt raise eyebrows – and yet I firmly believe it is justified.
I’ve already gone over most of the major cases of Cultural Marxism and subversive messaging, so now it’s time to look at the other side of the coin: here’s a movie whose single most defining theme is Hospitality Abused, and one whose climax involves the righteous slaughter of Invaders who greedily tried to lay claim to that which did not belong to them. This is also one aspect of the movie which the hostile anti-Woke critics have straight up misrepresented.
Prior to watching the movie, I had heard much talk about how much it pushed the idea of “Zeus' Law”, the obligation that you show strangers hospitality because you never know, one of those strangers might actually be a god in disguise. Anti-Woke Jewtubers made this out to be Nolan’s attempt to brainwash White people into opening up the borders to foreigners, but nothing in the movie actually justifies this reading – quite the contrary. Again, the big theme here is hospitality being ABUSED, kindness and virtue being exploited to the point where it becomes the ruin of moral people. This point is made that much more explicit when Odysseus’ Trojan Horse ploy is explicitly cited as a violation of Zeus' Law; the Trojans honored what was presented as a gift to the gods, and they all died because of it. You might not like an Odysseus who deeply regrets the Trojan Horse, but as part of a cautionary tale about the perils of opening your gates because conventional morality dictates it, I’m more than willing to let it slide.
As a rightwinger who has long been amazed by the stunning lack of gratitude shown by nonwhite immigrants to the Western countries who took them in, the behavior of the suitors in Nolan’s Odyssey served as a striking representation of a very specific kind of Evil, one that very rarely is acknowledged in mainstream circles. Despite how wimpy as he was made out to be, it was impossible to not relate to Telemachus as a young White man seeing his home and his birthright stolen from him by hostile Invaders who eventually target him for destruction, despite having been shown nothing but generosity. These are “people” whose greed is limitless, who have a complete and perfect understanding of their Rights, yet who get offended and aggressive the moment Obligations are brought up.
Again, I don’t see how any alternate reading is possible here. And no, Nolan doesn’t chicken out when it comes to finally dealing with suitors: they get massacred during the climax of the movie, and it is absolutely glorious. Yes, some of them are ultimately spared; but only those who surrender, expose their necks and submit themselves to Odysseus’s judgment. Lots and lots of suitors are killed – and the fact that they get the chance to fight back in no way diminishes Odysseus, in fact, him being forced overcome steeper odds only makes his eventual triumph more satisfying. -

Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of the Odyssey is surely this year’s most controversial movie, which is a real shame, because this SHOULD have been a modern classic: one of the defining tales of Western Civilization being handled by one of the Anglosphere’s greatest living movie directors, how could you go wrong? Well, for starters, you could subject Helen of Troy to a browngrade and have a fucking tranny depict a heroic Greek soldier…
Yeah, the more we learned about the movie, the worse it got, to the point where this was starting to sound like a legendary train wreck, straight up cultural vandalism. However, in spite of that (or rather, for that very reason) mainstream film critics gave the movie rave reviews – and even some ostensibly “anti-Woke” reviewers were quite positive. Are they all paid shills and/or propagandists, or did Nolan actually prove his critics wrong?
I saw the movie yesterday and here’s my take: most of what the anti-Woke JewTubers have said about Nolan’s Odyssey was accurate, but they HAVE gotten some key parts of the movie wrong, or are just straight up misrepresenting it for clicks. Not to let Nolan and Hollywood off the hook mind you, because they made a lot of bad calls, usually for the worst of reasons.
For starters, the modern American English dialogue is suboptimal at best, and pure cringe at worst, with some lines destined to go down in infamy. While not cheap or badly made overall, the $250 million price budge still feels hard to understand in terms of what’s actually presented onscreen (2004’s Troy looked far grander).
More surprisingly, the sound mixing and cinematography is at some points just bad: the “music” accompanying some of the scenes with the cyclops just comes across as loud, unpleasant noise with no other purpose than giving you a headache. Meanwhile, the way the sinking of Odysseus’s ship is shot made me think the goal was to trigger epileptic fits.
Nolan also can’t seem to accept the story on its own terms, constantly trying to force his Current Year sensibilities on it. And this doesn’t just apply to the culture war side of things: the Trojan Horse is treated with a level of suspicion that evokes modern man’s familiarity with the story, rather than the bewilderment the ancients would have felt when presented with such a bizarre “gift”. At one point the Trojans even repeatedly stab the horse precisely to check for Greek soldiers hiding within it – which surely seems smart to Nolan, but doesn’t make sense on the story’s own terms, since at that point the Trojans have already accepted the horse as an offering to the gods. They’d drag the giant, wheel-less wooden horse all the way into their city to honor the gods…only to desecrate that very offering to the gods by cynically piercing it with their swords? Also, one of the Greek soldiers hiding inside the horse actually ends up getting stabbed during this process; his mouth is covered, sure, but are you seriously telling me the Trojan soldier was completely oblivious to his sword piecing flesh? It’s all an example of Nolan, while trying to be so much more clever than those ignorant Bronze Age barbarians, actually making his movie way dumber.
By far the worst aspect of Nolan’s Odyssey is however the casting. You KNOW it’s a shitshow when fucking Zendaya playing Athena has only provoked a muted response, simply because multiple other casting offenses are so much more egregious. For the record, Zendaya in no way possesses *any* of the qualities that I would associate with the Greek Goddess of Wisdom, AND it’s another anti-White race swap - but at the very least she IS of the right sex! This is more than I can say for Ellen Page as Sinon. You could argue it’s a somewhat minor role and thus not that great of fuckup, but Sinon actually looms quite large in the story (oh, the irony!), with Page at one point even getting to berate and lecture Odysseus with her goofy-ass troon voice. She actually sounds a bit like one of those pre-Peter Dinklage midgets you’d see in sitcoms like Seinfeld and The King of Queens, which is oddly fitting I guess (a lot of creative camerawork had to be utilized to hide the fact that this heroic Greek soldier is actually a tiny little woman).
As for Blacked Helen of Troy – come on now, do I even need to explain just how ridiculous and contemptible this is? Every moment Hood Helen was on screen took me right out of the movie; as did every moment with her twin sister, and with her and Agamemnon’s nog daughter. Hell, blacks keep popping up all over the movie, always looking completely out of place. There was even at least one random Asian guy among Odysseus’s crew – who knew that more than 3000 years ago, Ithaca was more racially diverse than London or New York were 70 years ago?
The questionable casting extends beyond just the headline grabbers. As Telemachus, Tom Holland is a likable lightweight, but while he may make sense for the role given the way it was written, the way it was written makes no sense to me: how can a 21 year old crown prince, with the blood of a Hero running through his veins, be THIS sheltered, helpless and infantilized? We’re in the Bronze Age, not Current fucking Year, I’m pretty sure they didn’t have the luxury of our ridiculously extended adolescence back then, and Telemachus isn’t supposed to be a Zoomer NEET! The movie even acknowledges the practical and legal reasons for why he specifically can’t be the one to physically deal with Suitors, so there was no reason to make Telemachus such a fragile manchild.
Anne Hathaway as Penelope fares better overall, though a late Feminist rant strikes a real sour note. That said, she feels real and raw as the long-suffering, but loyal wife of Odysseus, silently seething as her unwelcome suited render her home unrecognizable. Then there’s Odysseus himself, Matt Damon (insert Team America clip here). For quite a while, he didn’t really work for me: he lacked the gravitas of a Great Man, never felt like a man of the Bronze Age (his establishing shot instantly made me think “costumed actor” rather than “it’s Odysseus in the flesh!”), and was far too dour and joyless to work as the kind of mischievous Trickster that Sean Bean so successfully portrayed in Troy. -

Saw the Odyssey, it was very very good. You might not want to hear this but the message of the movie was very conservative (religious morals are necessary to keep the true nature of man in check, and Odysseus has to atone for his sin in breaking those morals) and the 'controversial' casting decisions made sense in the context of the film: Elliot page's sinon was a character who was a child when he was enlisted into the Trojan war and has experienced the horror of the war which has prematurely aged his appearance (think about those photos of boys who were enlisted into WWI and their gaunt, haunted appearance after the war). It's actually very clever casting. Zendaya's Athena is at the climax of the movie revealed to be taking on the appearance of a temple girl Odysseus saw being executed at the sacking of Troy, with the point being that she is trying to make him remember and come to terms with the mortal sin he committed against her and the gods then. As for Helen, the movie specifically states that her's kidnapping was just an excuse to declare what was actually a political war on Troy and the movie outright says that she's no great beauty with Menalaus himself laughing that idea that her disfigured face could launch a thousand ships.
The only two things I had an issue with was the pacing of the action (which is sort of built into the pacing of the original work so there's not much that can be done about it) and what at some times was stilted writing. Two other things of note was the incredible design of polyphemus and an absolute Oscar worthy performance from John leguizamo -
