Re your third point: Linux could not trivially switch to GPLv3 even if kernel developers intended to do so because everyone involved would need to agree and some authors cannot agree anymore on account of being dead. Their contributions would need to be replaced first.
@whitequark In reporting about cars, kWh could actually be sensible because BEV batteries are also measured in kWh and BEV "fuel" economy is measured in kWh / 100 km. With some smaller cars using 12 kWh / 100 km, those 0.12 kWh from one braking event could drive that same car a whole kilometer. Doing that calculation with Joules would be harder.
@libreleah Well... there are no moderates actually. There's way too much people who do not care about the dignity of people different enough from them. And then there's our right and extreme right parties who seem to actively want to violate the dignity of foreigners, jobless, disabled, ... people.
@libreleah One example: Germany has, in principle, a wealth tax, which is not levied anymore since the constitutional court decided in 1996 that the formula to calculate it is not OK and Bundestag has to change it. They could just do that and have billions of euros more in taxes per year. Instead, they want to look harder at which jobless people they could punish for smallest infractions. Oh, and then they lower taxes on flights, about 350 M€/year.
I'm an extremist in that I demand the provisions of Article 1 to be kept, that »Human dignity shall be inviolable. To respect and protect it shall be the duty of all state authority.«, which our current administration does not actually want to do very much. Just have a look at where they want to save money, and where they do NOT want to acquire additional money...
@libreleah Can confirm, I've been scrolling past your Wall of Text some times in the last weeks... 😉 But only some times, when it just wasn't that interesting to me. I wish I could use game console hacking knowledge, I just can't though.
@necrophcodr If we continue exhausting CO2, earth will definitely become too hot to sustain human life. So we need to stop that and find anything else, including reducing our standard of living - or be cooked.
@necrophcodr We cannot stop exhaling CO2, of course. Maybe other things. But we need to stop every CO2 emission we possibly can, and using heat pumps instead of burning stuff is a rather easy thing to do.
And that "PV needs mining and rare earth metals" thing - that's exaggeration and FUD of those who want us to continue burning stuff we buy from them.
@necrophcodr I have not yet heard of PV panels becoming uneconomical in less than 15 years here in EU (other than by external damage). If that's an actual problem in the US, and not FUD again, you USians need to have a pointed discussion with your vendors.
