It turns out that they have a presence in Twitter from July 2020 and their first pinned tweet there is a hex code which I surmise it to be their public key. So that is a first clue. Will they also map it to a human friendly name like ATP et al do? A Hubzilla in the making?

That is my editorial add-on. Empirically it seems to me that my Mastodon server delivers posts longer than 500 chars. From this thread I understand that if the text is say 472 chars, but the linked URL is however long, the post will be accepted, even though the actual char count is > 500 chars. So am suggesting why not a bit more permissive and allow a few grace chars ssi the author can finish the sentence. That was my point.

(Only half jokingly) Since the character count is only "approximately & roughly", why restrict the length of the post to 500 for posting; instead allow poster to exceed 500 to "finish" the sentence. Also there is no need to use things like "a11y", but spell it out fully.

Not into photography. Never used IG. Can you share some reasonings for posting to a pixelfed, rather than to a mastodon? Some UI elements? Thanks

In the case of internet, there is no other functioning or proposed network fitting the bill. So we could use Internet or Internet interchangeably. Not so in the case of fediverse. There are others, like diaspora*, Matrix that are similar. Then there is Indieweb. It turns out AP folks coined the term Fediverse for their version. We are using the term outside of its original meaning. So I feel F & f are different. It is Kleenex, Zipper, Escalator, Dumpster all over again. -

It was discussed in the forum a few yrs back. Look for comments from @aaronpk. He advocated use of Permissionless OAuth as is done by IndieAuth. In the absence of that, @owncast has improvised it by sending OTP as a DM. They call it FediAuth.

This has happened to SIP. They have settled on E.164 addr & for all practical purposes SS#7 is the protocol (!). XMPP has so many extensions it is easy to be incompatible. Inexplicably, but unsurprisingly both Google & Facebook decided that they will go alone & will not federate w anybody. And so we wait and see how this time it plays out.

Aswath Rao (aswath@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 26-Feb-2023 13:33:36 JST Aswath Rao @Stark9837 @fediversenews Having said that, there are certain minimal reqs. Firstly, the name space must be common. Second, there has to be a common protocol(s) the nodes use to facilitate comm between their users. It is that simple. And not so simple at a practical level. The nodes may have inconsistencies due to implementation diff, version mismatch and so on. But they all want to federate at an aspirational level.

Aswath Rao (aswath@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 26-Feb-2023 13:33:34 JST Aswath Rao @Stark9837 @fediversenews I don't think there can be a crisp defn of #Frediverse, since it is so easy to move away from it and that small deviation render a node not to interwork w other nodes. In that sense, it is an aspirational term. We want to be able communicate with a tone wo restriction. Like we seem to be able to do with postal & e mail, telephone. Of course there will be exceptions, but they will be small in numbers & for a shorter period of time.
